AndyMan 7 #1 November 13, 2002 First, a bit of geek history. There's a piece of open source software called GIMP - GNU Image Manipulation Program, but commonly goes by "The Gimp". (Don't ask what GNU means, if you understand recursiveness you probably already know what it means). The Gimp is a graphics editing tool for linux. It's the open source alternative to Photoshop. It's been worked on for years, was pretty basic originally, but is now surprisingly complex. It's a good replacement for Photoshop. Secondly, for years we've been hearing about Open Sources progression into film studios. We know that companies like Industrial Light and Magic have chosen linux for their rendering farms. We know that movies like Shrek are rendered entirely on linux clusters. What has been pretty much completely hidden from public is the software these guys are using. Well, here's one of the missing pieces: FILM GIMP. The geeks in Hollywood have literally taken the (free and open) source to GIMP, and rolled it into a video editing tool. Just as The GIMP is an alternative to photoshop, FILM GIMP appears to be an alternative to Premiere. http://www.desktoplinux.com/articles/AT7096363910.html Worth a read, and a check out. _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. Cajones 0 #2 November 13, 2002 Very sweet! Nice alternative for the poor computer geeks out there. Now they need to add the code for HD support. The laws of physics are strictly enforced.
wlie 0 #3 November 13, 2002 Though I've got an eMac, I still use GIMP on my Linux box 'coz I can't afford Photoshop. I was just looking to see if there was anything like GIMP for OS X, and ran into PhotoFX and MediaEdit. I haven't tried either but probably will soon.My other ride is the relative wind. There are people working on MacGIMP, with native and X11 versions.
indyz 1 #5 November 13, 2002 QuoteJust as The GIMP is an alternative to photoshop, FILM GIMP appears to be an alternative to Premiere. Not quite. FilmGIMP is an editor for doing touchup work on individual frames of a movie, like hair and dust removal when converting from film to digital. It operates on frames stored as individual files, not an entire movie in a file. It is not a non-linear editor. There are a few NLEs for Unix-type systems, such as Kino and Cinerella. Freshmeat also has a few more likely prospects.
