video clips needed

Recommended Posts

Travis here of Cowboy Video Productions http://skydivecowboyvideo.com/
We have previously put out a Rantoul DVD video and are fixing to start a new Freefly video.
Do you have any skydiving clips that you think would go great in a skydiving movie?
If so we are looking for anyone who would like to donate their footage to go in our next movie.
If you send us a mini DV tape with your footage, we will go through it and if we use any of your footage we will send you your tape back, have your name on the video for donating photographer and send you a copy of the new DVD movie we put out.
We are just getting started in the "underground" movies and could use the footage.
Our last movie was good and we got some great feedback from it. one was that we have more footage of different people....so we are on a quest to get more footage of different people.
you can mail us at skyedivr@yahoo.com or cowboyvideo@msn.com with any comments or suggestions.
thank you

Well, he's got bigger ones than I do for asking, but he's clearly stated up front what the deal is so any takers ought to know what they're getting into.

I wouldn't "donate" footage, but I'm not really sure what a good deal on this type of thing would be. It's not quite the same as a TV commercial and the bucks probably won't exactly be overflowing.

Generally speaking for stock footage (undirected - take what you can get out of the stuff I already have on-hand) for a commectial or TV program the going rate ought to be about $700 per minute with a 1 minute minimum. At least that's what it is for at least one well known camera flyer in the SoCal area.

Around here all the videographers mix all their footage and give the mix to one person that makes copies to sell to the DZ at the X-mas party and untill the next video is out. Most times we never see a dime back but we got our names on screen for a few seconds and a free video so we are all happy. Not everyone is in the sport to make money and some times its better to help another jumper out then it is to set a price tag on help.

Again, it all depends on the situation.

I'd -gladly- chip in some footage for a x-mas video or bar video of a special event, but what is being asked for in this case is -entirely- different.

BTW, don't you think that he's going to (or at least trying to) make some money off the DVD and VHS sales?

We try to make money off the year end stuff too... and usually each jumper just gets their video and credits and the person doingthe work of the overall editing, dubbing, etc takes the largest chunk of the money for their efforts.

The WFFC video is put together with the footage of dozens and dozens of jumpers for nothing more then a screen credit at the end and seeing their footage as part of a finished product. Most boogie videos seem to be put together by having people donate their footage to the lead editors for screen credits and stuff. I know my friend never saw money for giving over 3 DV tapes of stuff at WFFC 2001. He had 30 seconds of footage used and his name was in the credits.

I guess there is a difference between the pros and the people who are just happy to shoot video.

I definitely understand what everyone is saying.

The last (first) video we put out was of Rantoul and we sold for cost of the blank DVD, case cover and shipping. Sometimes you can see it on ebay for buy it now set at $18.
All our friends that were at Rantoul threw in their tapes and we made a pretty good video considering that we slammed it out in less than 60 hours (one weekend).

We aren't trying to get something for nothing that is for sure. I just figured I would ask if someone would like to throw in some footage to see it on a video.

Thanks to all of you who let us know what you think, because I didn't think of that side it. I could understand if we were trying to get $50 from each video or something, but we are doing it mostly for fun in hopes to at least break even and get some more good skydiving videos out there.

Thank you very much for your input everyone. We recognize that there are ALOT of skydivers that strap cameras on their heads to tape their buddies while fun jumping. These are the people that we are speaking to when we ask for footage. I shooot camera for tandems at my DZ but that is the only place I make money shooting film. These DVD's that we are putting together are sold for what we have in them including the printing of labels and sleeves for packaging and we do these for a number of simple reasons:
1. It is fun to compile and produce!
2. We have made a large number of new friends all over the country.
3. It developes our skills at shooting camera and freeflying wth friends as well as putting together videos that improve each time.
4. We see the attraction for skydivers shooting each other for fun to have their footage reach others.

We completely appreciate your sentiments on the money-side of this, and will not be asking for free commercial footage for the video. We just want to put together a fun video from jumpers across the country when the weather stinks in most parts, and have some fun with it. Believe me when I say that us poor young jumpers have more to loose here than you can bet. With all the DVD's that we will give away to the contributors and the few that we hope to sell on Ebay (in this case hopefully for a buck or 2 over cost), we will not even come close to breaking even on this. Our last video sold 42 copies on Ebay, that would amount to less than $100 profit if we were charging 2 dollars over cost to make and burn. But it is a fun way to stay involved whenthe weather keeps us grounded, and the friendships we develope are plenty of payment.

Well, I had 5 clips of mine used in the Swedish Friflaj 2002 video. Of course I wasn't paid and in fact I was happy to pay the $14US to buy a most excellent 2 hour long freeflying video.

I guess you are right - some people want a *deal* that is worth it, others who have full-time jobs outside the sport think of more than just the money.

Different strokes for different folks I guess... :S
