harro 0 #1 February 8, 2003 Hi ya all, Which is better for the beginner ???? Price wise the TRV16 is about $1,500 AUD ( which is the most attractive at the moment. Just after some feedback!Jumpy Jumpy??
quade 4 #2 February 9, 2003 All of the single CCD Sony cameras (both PC and TRV style) will give you just about the same image quality. In side-by-side comparisons, I doubt you'd be able to tell the difference. Some of the higher priced single CCD cameras have extra bells and whistles that you might not need and slightly larger LCD screens you don't really need either.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
newshooter12 0 #3 February 9, 2003 all those cameras are similar body styles, I believe, so try to buy the camera with the most manual functions you can afford. for example it's a lot easier to focus quickly, and lock it in, if you can set it to manual then use a focus ring up front to set it. Pick the one with the biggest 3-Chip CCD, optics and LCD display. Don't forget 1394 and Lanc/Control-C. Hope this helps.... Disclaimer. I don't fly camera yet, but I do shoot for a living. And I'm sure that somebody is going to say something about your jump numbers and to make sure you're safe, but I'll leave that to the pro flyers... I've got a couple, three, four hundred more before I try myself. matt
newshooter12 0 #4 February 9, 2003 Side note.... I couldn't believe that anyone would beat you to a camera post. But then I looked over my post and you beat me to it. matt
quade 4 #5 February 9, 2003 Actually, all of the cameras listed in the poll only have one CCD and all are definately suitable for camera flying. Maybe not shooting "Gone With The Wind" or 300-ways that will end up on TV, but definately good enough for 4-way, AFF & Tandem stuff -- certainly good enough for somebody just starting out.I -personally- only think a person needs to consider a large LCD size if they plan on doing a lot of debriefs from the camera (possibly while in the plane back up to altitude), but that's not usually the case for somebody just starting out. Otherwise, a smaller LCD will do and save a few hundred dollars ($US).All of the cameras listed in the poll also have all of the manual settings required for camera flying and all of the proper connections too!quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
newshooter12 0 #6 February 9, 2003 I guess I'm spoiled. I find the viewfinders on consumer cameras tiny and like to have a bigger screen to check things out. But I'd probably go with you and save the $$ if the only difference were the screen or something like bluetooth that I don't have any use for at present. matt
harro 0 #7 February 10, 2003 Of coarse 3CCD is always going to be better, but in australia im going to be spending over $5,000 buckeroos on it. Most of the Camera flyers I know fly 1CCD cameras, so I guess getting one now and learning the skills with a cheaper camera will be better than saving all the cash and not getting any real experience for a fair while. Need a second job or will strip for cash!!!! Jumpy Jumpy??
cameramonkey 0 #8 February 11, 2003 or you can do what I did. buy a cheap hi-8 camcorder, and play. you will get to build experience, without worrying about breaking the bank if you have to jettison your helmet. Then when you are ready, upgrade to digital. just my .02Two wrongs don't make a right, however three lefts DO!
konradptr 0 #9 February 11, 2003 Seems to me that getting into 3-CCD vs. 1-CCD for a poor, beginning skydiver is kind of like a couple of broke skydivers talking about which is better- the Ferrari or Porsche... Get a used PC9 or one of the older PC Sonys, and you can't go wrong. You will have plenty of tech support at your DZ, firewire, memory sticks, etc... For maybe around $500USD... ------------------------------------------ Getting banned isn't that bad......
CanuckInUSA 0 #10 February 11, 2003 Maybe even pick up a used PC-9 which eats tapes? Sorry that wasn't nice to say. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
