Best protection camera helmet?

Recommended Posts

I did a search on this and couldn't find anything so...

I'm thinking about a new camera helmet for BASE. I want a lid that can provide a good level of protection as well as being a good mount for my PC9. I currently have a Hanson fullface (camera topmount) with the DIY liner and am not convinced that in a high impact situation it would protect as well as a Protec. I think the foam would compress and become "solid" hence transfering the blow directly to the head. I appreciate that any helmet is better than none protection wise, but wondered if somebody had done the research and could advise?

Thanks

Stay safe

Actually, in some cases the opposite -may- be true -- especially when it comes to camera helmets and if you think about all those little bolts and do-hickies that have the potential to get embedded in your skull if struck the wrong way.

Further, depending on how the foam/liner is laid out, it's possible that the helmet -could- transfer -more- force to the head than if it simply wasn't there.

Skydiving helmets are not there to provide protection against collisions with the earth. Camera helmets, even less so.

I posteed a link to a company that makes interiors for protecs and full face skydiving helmets that far exceeds anything bought off the shelf in the safety forum. i forget the name of the thread but it had protec in it(sorry) The name of the company is aero Oregon or something like that. We have to use their liners in Pro tecs if we want to use them for HALO operations. They are way better than any interior I've seen in a helmet IMO and are easy to install, velcro and I recommend some shoe goo to lock every thing in good. I'll look around for the link and if I find it I'll let you know.

found it, here ya go: http://oregonaero.com/p77_2001.html#skydive

Have you considered buying a mountain biking helmet or ski helmet and adding the camera mount to it?
With a bit of fiddling, you can add a camera mount to almost any helmet. It's not ideal for shooting video, but if shooting video is your priority, you're probably doing the wrong kind of jumping.
I'd pretty much just pick the helmet for protection, then add a camera mount.
Also, have you considered posting this question to the ABA Forum? The producer of Beyond Extreme is on that board quite often, and he's got a ton of BASE camera jumps.

Thanks for the input guys I appreciate it. It has bugged me for a while that the lid I'm wearing was probably designed as a camera mount first with protection as an after thought. The Oregon liners are looking a good option as they can go into my protec, nice and cheap ;)

Tom, Thanks for the heads up, I'll mail Tom B

Nice looking helmets and web site but MAN, the prices are way on the highside.(IMO) For those prices, I'd have to see one in person before investing in it.
