kevin922 0 #1 February 19, 2003 Was watching my good stuff VHS again the other day, and was curious how Joe got the angles where he is slightly above a skydiver but you can clearly see all the ground rush below him? (the wingsuit dives are an example of this) -- is he in some helicopter or something? The distance appears to stay the same yet it doesn't appear it is a skydiver helmet angle. AggieDave 6 #2 February 19, 2003 Its a telephoto camera on a helicopter. I think that's what its called, atleast. Eitherway, it gives you the feel that the jumpers are deploying at 300 ft...--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." quade 4 #3 February 19, 2003 Yes, those shots come from a helicopter equipped with a gyroscopically stabilized mount and a very long lens. The long lens is what makes the shot look "compressed", the motion of the jumper makes the ground seem to zoom by and the gyro mount makes it all possible. See http://www.gyron.com/ Oh yeah, if you want to do something like that, bring BUCKETS of cash.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

shindig 0 #6 February 20, 2003 They fly that camera out at elsinore ever once in a while. The guys who fly it get qualified at lake elsinore buy the owners of the camera system. It is basically the same one they use in traffic helos.
blair700 0 #7 February 22, 2003 At what altitude is the helo generally at for this type footage?
quade 4 #8 February 23, 2003 Good question. I don't know -exactly- but I've seen it used (in the past) for the X-Games Skysurf and it seemed to me that they were at or around exit altitude for that and could follow them all the way down to deployment altitude. It can have a VERY long lens.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
flyingferret 0 #9 February 24, 2003 If you look around on the products website, it shows some demos versus a competing product, Wescam, I believe. It lists where the shots were taken for "5. Altitude and conditions were IDENTICAL — gimbals were flown at 12,000', X-38 Drop initiated at 39,500'" Like Quade said...VERY long lens setup is possible. I would imagine that they were near exit altitude.-- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.
