Encoding for the web

Recommended Posts

What program does everyone use when they want to toss something on the web and what settings do you use? I'm using the new encoded from Microsoft but it just seems so slow compaired to what others seem to be saying how long theirs takes.

maybe i got your question wrong, but i'll go ahead and tell you what i do:

i use virtual dub and encode my edited dv avis with divx pro 5.02 codec for encoding. i managed to get a 1,4Gb clip to 20 Mb, but with VERY poor quality (as soon as i upload it somewhere, i'll show off with it here ;))

Quicktime Pro. Lots of options as far as codecs, webstreaming, etc, etc. For $29, it's a pretty handy tool to have. You can make the quality as good or minimal as you like by choosing different codecs, frame rates, key frame rates, size, etc. You can also set the bit rate.

Quite a few of the really good quality videos on headdown.net are in Quicktime format. Base Forever and Castles in the Sky being favourites of mine. I actually exported the two foregoing videos as DV files (using Quicktime) and burned them to DVD so that I could watch them on my TV. The quality is very good considering they started as fairly small files.
