Do I need a reserve repack?

Recommended Posts

According to FAA rules it is every 120 days unless one of the componenets in your system is made of natural fibers (highly unlikely) then it would be 60 days.
However do check to see if the rules of a foreign jumper visiting apply, you would have to check with the DZ you intent to jump at, some have foreign waivers and some don't.

quick question for you...

I had a reserve repack on 11/6/02 (i.e. in November).

I'm a brit who has moved to the US and I'm a little bit confused by the whole 90/180/whatever reserve repack cycle over here.

When do I next need a reserve repack?

Thanks in advance,

if you were visiting, you the british repack would apply, but since you moved back, and in your other post it was packed here anyway, so it sounds more like you were visiting there for a while.

so the 120 day repack cycle apply's.

and someone, correct me if i'm wrong, but i don't think i am.

It's the government, the Federal Aviation Administration, not the USPA that governs the inspection requirements. Violation can include $1000 fine per occurance for the pilot and skydiver and suspension or the pilots license. (Very rare but you are causing the pilot to break the law if you jump with an out of date reserve.)

Here is the text of the part on foreign parachutists using UNAPPROVED foreign gear. I'd have to default to FAA regs of 120 days for a foreign national using an approved rig packed by a FAA rigger.

"Sec. 105.49 Foreign parachutists and equipment

(a) No person may conduct a parachute operation, and no pilot in command of an aircraft may allow a parachute operation to be conducted from that aircraft with an unapproved foreign parachute system unless-

(1) The parachute system is worn by a foreign parachutist who is the owner of that system.

(2) The parachute system is of a single-harness dual parachute type.

(3) The parachute system meets the civil aviation authority requirements of the foreign parachutist's country.

(4) All foreign non-approved parachutes deployed by a foreign parachutist during a parachute operation conducted under this section shall be packed as follows-

(i) The main parachute must be packed by the foreign parachutist making the next parachute jump with that parachute, a certificated parachute rigger, or any other person acceptable to the Administrator.

(ii) The reserve parachute must be packed in accordance with the foreign parachutist's civil aviation authority requirements, by a certificated parachute rigger, or any other person acceptable to the Administrator."

The easiest place to read all the regs are at

Go to the "safety" page on this website and there is a repack calculator. You can put in the date it was packed and how long the cycle is and it'll give you the date it needs redone.

You can also have an email send to you before the next time it needs it.

Not so fast. Although no one thinks of this and it is widely ignored by everyone, the safety stow on your reserve free bag has rubber in it. IE: a natural substance. But like I said it is ignored (good thing).

I don't think the FAA meant natural substances.

"Within 120 days before the date of its use, if its canopy, shroud, and harness are composed exclusively of nylon, rayon, or similar synthetic fiber or material that is substantially resistant to damage from mold, mildew, and other fungi, and other rotting agents propagated in a moist environment; or
(2) Within 60 days before the date of its use, if it is composed of any amount of silk, pongee, or other natural fiber, or material not specified in paragraph (b)(1) of this section. "

Pilot bail-out/emergency rigs usually use rubber bands for stowing the lines and the FAA is aware of this. Even though the FAA doesn't actually state it, I think they don't consider rubber bands or bungee material causing a rig's re-pack cycle to be dropped to 60 days. I don't know if I would call rubber; "substantially resistant to damage from mold, mildew, and other fungi, and other rotting agents propagated in a moist environment", but it hasn't seemed to be a problem and the FAA doesn't seem to think it is either. I have replaced broken or worn safety stows, but I haven't seen one rotted, even after years of being packed in high humidity environments. I don't think that it is ignored, but accepted that rubber is OK for 120 (+) days.

Sshhhhhh! Don't let that out....it's all synthetic, no natural stuff anywhere...
