MrHixxx 0 #1 March 15, 2003 I realize this is photography, but part of camera is building helmets I have come to realize. My Havok is falling apart and I've had similar problems with my Optik. All of the velcro keeps coming out of the helmet and the vent screen (Jeanie isn't returning e-mails right now, at least to me). What is the consensus on the type of glue to use to stick the velcro back into the helmet? It looks like silicone was the original compound used that didn't cut the mustard. Does anyone know a good thinner to remove the old stuff without damaging the finish or epoxy of the helmet? thanx, Hixxxdeath,as men call him, ends what they call men -but beauty is more now than dying’s when
Deuce 1 #2 March 15, 2003 Yo HIxx, I just love my hot glue gun for stuff like that. No nasty vapors, sets up almost instantly, holds just about forever (almost 200 jumps on mine). I find it to be almost as good as epoxy, with none of the downside. Gaffer's tape and hot glue. Fix anything. JP

murrays 0 #5 March 16, 2003 QuoteSweet, thanks Deuce. Anyone know how to break down that Silicone still???-HixxxI don't know about silicone except from doing the caulking on my house and it is terrible stuff to remove...scrape and sand down to bare wood is what I have to do to get the surface ready to paint and re-caulk. You might have to do the same to get the surface ready to accept hot glue. The glue might not hold very well if there is a layer of silicone under where you are gluing. I hope somebody has a better solution.-- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
Deuce 1 #6 March 16, 2003 Well, there's this neat stuff called "Goof-off" that will disolve most anything, I think it's great stuff. I know they carry it at Home Depot. I'd be concerned using it in the helmet, maybe delaminating the fiberglass or something. I think you'd be best off scraping it out with a straight edge razor. I'd use the least amount of solvent you could. JP
PhreeZone 20 #7 March 16, 2003 Goop-Off? And if its like the stuff on mine I was able to just peel it off once I could get a corner lifted. I used Shoo-Goo on mine as the glue since I had it already at home.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
freeflyguy 0 #8 March 16, 2003 Goof Off is Zylene based, and nasty. I don't think it will cut silicone though, just the finish on the helmet. An eraser. Pencil eraser will do wonders. That and a a bit of citrus hand cleaner, with no grit. Might work. If it doesn't, just fly a ghetto helmet. That is all the rage anyway. ---------------------------- bzzzz
