Camera setup

Recommended Posts

I just finished reading the "how many jumps..." thread through again, and am finally gonna post my first note in the photography forum. I havent jumped a camera yet, so I thought a new post was warrented. I have been reading and searching the forums here for a long time, and really respect the sensible opinions of the moderators. And in Quades honor I will NOT jump my camera before 200. :)

Our Freefly jumps are getting really smooth, with some docking and relitive transitions, I GOT to get this on video! That being said, I am ready to puchase my stuff. Im looking for some last minute feedback before I pull the trigger on this one. Setup as follows:

2KC FF2 w/CameyeII, and Sony DCR-PC101 w/Diamond 0.3x.

I am ordering the FF2 with the standard carbon fibre finish. It will have the new ratcheting chin cup and new quick release and CameyeII button between and behing the staggered dytter pockets. I went with the FF2 because of the low profile and snag reduction in the design (but wanted more acces to the camera than afforded on the FFX). Although the new Sony 103/105 looks interesting, I still have too many questions about how it handles the 16:9 and backwards compatibility to the Sonys all my friends are flying. To be quite honest, I dont want to wait for it anyway. :). The new Sonys will knock down the price of the 101, and Ill be flying a proven camera. The Diamond was kinda a easy choice, although the Red Eye from Way Cool sounds good too. I realize how close im gonna have to be to get all of the 0.3x, but for the campy weekend warrior hobbie video Im looking for, I think it will be just fine. I also will not be using a ring sight due to the snag risk, and the wide angle will make aiming a little less critical. :) The folks at 2KC say I will have to zoom in a little anyway to "not see the helmet". I understand from reading the forums that digital zoom is not as good as optical. Will 10X optical get me by the helmet? Maybe one of you guys have the same setup, and can fill me in......

Whelp! That about does it, appreciate any comments or feedback, thanks alot!

It's clear you've taken some time and read through this stuff. Cheers! It's just so cool that there's so much good info here, and people are taking advantage of it.

So Donate to Sangiro:)
Anyhow, I've got the Diamond .3 on my 120. I THINK that it stays an optical zoom until you get to the obscene multiplication. You won't need to go near that far. Just barely bump the zoom to take the edge of the helmet out. If you like the campy look, having some helmet in frame is kinda cool. It reminds the viewer that there's a camera on somebody's head and they're IN the skydive.

Looks like you got all the good stuff. Be safe and have a ton of fun.

Thanks a ton, bro! Ive read so many of your posts, I feel like I know you. Ive really seen you "grow up" as a camera flyer just by reading ALL the archives of info here. I remember you being jazzed with your first 'paying' job. Hehe. I mentioned Quade by name, but was hoping you'd drop your 2 cents on me! BAM!

Thanks for the note!

Yeah, no shit.

Just understanding the stuff enough to be able to ask decent questions is such a big deal. Without this forum it would take FOREVER.

And Quade is about one of the most generous people I have ever met, with both camera info and plain old hospitality. I was scared to death the first time I met him at Perris and he asked to see my helmet!

I tell you, If I was planning on doing tandem, or any other kind of commercial shooting I'd get the Bat Rack. I'm happy with my Hawkeye, but I wouldn't mikd another mounting plate on top.

Really, just copy Quade:ph34r::ph34r:

Whew!...Thats big boy toy stuff right there! Ive been noticing alot of setups around the drop zone latley, you should see McGowan's! Hehe, like a battleship! I think I saw smokestacks or something. :). Have no intentions on making any money at this, so more power to you pros!! Im just gonna take baby steps and try and do this right. Everything else in my short skydiving career has been textbook, no scares or close calls. Hopefully this will continue. Just in case, though, Ive chosen a smooth configuration with a quick release. "Cause you NEVER know!!".

Really looking forward to it! I think the setup will rock. Now that Im done doing all the homework on the hardware, I can cram up on all the more subtle configuration and breakoff issues, etc...

Thanks for the note, is there anything you DONT like about your setup, or something you would do diff if given the chance??
