Sony vs JVC

Recommended Posts

I have been in the market for a camcorder and have heard many people tell me to always go Sony, but when asked if they have ever owned a JVC they say no.
Is there anybody out there who has owned a JVC? If so, what is your opinion?
I am looking at one of the new dvp3 or dvp7, because they are so small.

I have not owned a JVC, but I know several people who have and have been disappointed with them, some to the point that they have sold them at a significant discount just to unload it, to go buy a Sony.

Battery stamina, functionality, and accessory availability were the common complaints.

I know someone that had a JVC only to sell it and buy a Sony. Durability, in camera functions, a Lanc port are just some of the prolems. There is no reason to re invent the wheel when it comes to what it took serious videographers years find out. Save yourself the trouble buy a Sony. Plus with the cost of the new TTV's, i don;t believe you could get a better deal in a JVC.

Yep, I did have a JVC (9500) and now have a Sony (trv11 and trv6).

The change had two reasons:

1. my JVC ended up falling, together with my helmet, 7000 feet to the ground[:/]

2. the sony is far more skydiver friendly: although the JVC had (in my opinion) a better picture quality it was not able to hold the manual focus, so each time I had to set it myself, and ended up opening the system and putting in a switch to disable the focus. Secondly, sony tapes in a JVC cam do not really work all the time, so I only could use TDK. And last but not least: EVERYBODY is using Sony.... so lot's of experience.

(By the way: one positive feature of the JVC that's is not on my sony: the side-load for the tape, the Sony has a bottom-load, which means I have to remove the quicksnap each time)

So... I would go for Sony

Actually, my buddy (non-skydiver) has a newer model JVC, which is controlled perfectly by Windows ME and now 2000 via Firewire. I still prefer Sony, but JVC did get smart and add Firewire.

"how you would mount a JVC since there are no D-boxes available for them. Additionally, you can't use a Cam-eye nor Firewire."

Gawd only knows how cameras were mounted before D-boxes were invented.;)
Its not just Sony's that are equipped with LANC (cam eye socket) or Firewire (aka iLink, or IEEE 1394). Plenty other cameras out there have these.
I've seen some nice footage from non sony cams.
But I would recommend sony over just about anything until we start to look at serious (professional) cameras.

Just throwing my 2-cent's in here. i have recommended only sony but some of the people were only concerned about price (JVC has always given up quality in an attempt to beat sony I.e.-you get what you pay for). i can truth fully say that every person who went against my advise soon learned that JVC was not the way to go. all converted to sony. the skydiving community chose sony a long time ago way back in history and all of the gear makers jumped on the sony boat. (but i'm considering getting a panasonic AG-DVX 100 which has a true 24p function. if any body has info about the stabilization system for this model please email me).

I owned a JVC video camera when I first started jumping and filming 4-ways and larger groups. THEY SUCK!

Stabilizers are much better with SONY and WAY easier to use than JVC. There are so many perks to SONY that unless you really want to know the hardships I went though, I just leave it at that.

GO SONY! It will only make your life easier.

I had a JVC that I got from Citruit city ... hooked it up, took some footage, and returned it very soon to Circuit City for a FULL REFUND !!, a week later I got me a sweet Sony PC9 - never looked back. Sony is more durable, more compatible with other devices, and just provides higher quality footage - which is most important. especially in our field.
