DSR-PDX10 same issue as TRV-900 and 950

Recommended Posts

Unfortunately the PDX10 has the same issue, "flutter," as the 900 and 950.

To make sure we put it to a true camera flier test, we strapped it on Peter Galli (OneLine productions, thanks Pete!) and asked that he free fly the sh*^ out of it. He did and it seriously flutters in the sit position as well as others (Pete can better describe his positions he noticed the issues most, so I'll let him know to watch the post).

I've had it apart twice, so here is what I have learned so far.

1) The color separation is indeed the Sure SteadyShot firmware falling behind the vibration of the optical mechanical lens that corrects for movement.

Disabling SteadyShot (disconnecting the acceleration sensor from the middle system card and/or disabling SteadyCam - I did both) eliminates the color separation but not the flutter. You also give up a steady picture.

Sealing the camera tape area, speaker, and view finder has no effect.

The addition of a wide angle lens has nothing to do with the issue, rather it seals the front of the cam. The internal camera lens body is separate from the focus and filter ring. (kinda surprising)

2) The issue is now mechanical, but I'm having a tough time disassembling the prism body to inspect the "floating lens." It has SIP (soldered in place) connections that are easily damaged all over it. I need a special tool.

I'll let those interested know if I can solve it and I have some pictures to document the possible fix.

Sorry if that sounds a bit technical...........I can now drink a beer with those that shelled out the cash for the 900 and 950....I feel your pain....but now I'm pissed, so I'm gonna' fix it.

I posted an update on an earlier post so some may have already seen these pics.

I was able to separate the lens body and their actually is a "floating iris" that is a lens that corrects for vibration and movement.

On each side of this section of the lens body are mounts for sensors that detect the movement of the telephoto lens in front and the focus lens behind. If you blow air past the camera body by these sensor ports, the floating lens vibrates. Sealing greatly reduces the vibration, but a hard blast of air still causes some vibration. There is no room to seal the entire lens body.

I'm going to try a 3 rather than 7 coil spring on the floating lens (the VX uses a stronger spring as well because the floating lens is heavier). Unfortunately I have to wait a couple of weeks to get a spring assortment to try.

I'll let you know if it works. It actually is not that tough of a fix if it does, but I'm sure your thinking what ass would take apart a $2.5k DVCAM Camcorder? It’s easy....really.....ok I'm an ass

You would think it would........

For some reason the sudden change in pressure on one side of the camera versus the opposite side causes the lens to vibrate even when most of the camera is taped shut (do a search for TRV900 or TRV950 to read all of the attemted fixes). It's impossible to completely seal the camera, even with a Dbox.

I want to keep the benefit of the SteadyShot so I'm going to slowly increase the rigidity of the lens spring until the vibration stops during ff.

Update............

Even with the lens assembly completely sealed, the "shutter" is still noticeable. The spring idea basically disables the SteadyShot functionality and the resulting video is worse than the "shutter" issue.

By completely sealing the internal lens body I was able to reduce the "shutter" significantly, but it is still noticeable on exit and certain speeds and body positions during FF/RW. The only thing I did not try was putting the camera in a completely sealed box. The SteadyShot hardware just can't compensate for the vibration caused by FF/RW.

So I'm throwing in the towel on this project.

Bottom line is the TRV850, TRV950, and PDX10 all have identical lens bodies and all have the "shutter" problem.

Cheers!

Looking forward to see ya at the American Boogie.........fine Tequila in the works....

Dang, I know you will, but I'm "on the wagon" for a while.

Boy I'll tell ya, when I first saw those pictures I thought you were nuts and had a worthless pile of junk left.

Now I know you're nuts, but at least can reasemble a camera....:D

You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

I fixed Scott's camera on top of my locker Sat. and noticed other jumpers moving their cameras as far away from me as possible...............when I got it torn down to about five pieces, a couple of folks stood behind me with kind of a blank stare.......had it back together during a 15min call and the stares became shaking heads.....

It's not rocket science

Let me barrow the PD170.......ok let me just hold it.......come on look no screw drivers anywhere...I sware

Cheers!
