Sony IP55 - Has anyone used it yet?

Recommended Posts

They are only 15 oz., and so tiny! The specs say the quality is the same as the PC 120'ish cameras. This model does have a LANC port that the IP5 and IP7 are missing. So far as I can tell by fingering the camcorder in the store, the only real problem is going to be compatibility with other current miniDV recorders.

Has anyone used this yet? What do you guys think?

Kim

That's funny, when I e-mail Sony about the camera they told me it didn't have a LANC port.

By the way, how have you been Kim. Long time no see.

It's the IP5 that doesn't have the LANC. The IP55 is a more squat TRV-style camera. It doesn't say it on the Sony website, but it is on the camera. I checked out the camera at Fry's today, but they had a power outage and couldn't power their cameras for me.

Head to sony.com, search ip55 and you'll see some of the specs.

It has been a long time! I do believe I should get out and travel again. Soon! :)

How critical is it that you get others footage or they get yours? If you will never be swaping videos it might work but at boogies for now your pretty much up a creak if you want to add your jump to the boogie tape or get some ones view of a sweet dive firewired to you.

Here is a thread I started a while back on the same subject.

I think you should check again, because from Sony, they state there is no LANC jack.

Hmmm, didn't I read somewhere that camera fliers in the US must have Firewire/iLink/IEEE1394 compatible cameras if they want to jump in national comps?? Although these cams are, they do not really comply with the spirit of this requirement.
It would suck to be limited in this way, especially if you are considering travelling.
There are also issues with DV editing on these systems, which may be in the process of being resolved.
I don't believe the quality is "similar" to the recent PC120 cams, but I'm going on what I believe to be the case with the on-board compression systems.
Upshot is, I'd lay off the Sony Micro MV cams for the time being, but hey, I've been wrong before, and I'll be wrong again.:SB|

Ditto. The microMV is not quite ready to force its way into mainstream skydiving video.

My vote is for the TRV70. I believe you'll be happier in the long-run.

FAI rules state that the camera must be able to firewire to a PAL camera.

I met a guy at richmond last week that has one, he says buy a sony PC camera, I guess the micro dvs, are less quality (video) and more fragile if you bang them into something.

Thanks Cajun. See, I was wrong!;) I knew there was something silly like that in somebody's regs.

For the record folks.
The Micro MV cams cannot firewire footage to 'normal' minidv cams, the compression systems are completely different.

The USPA rules are different than the FAI rules when it comes to video. USPA requires NTSC cameras (SCM 1-1.1.6 C 2).

There is NO requirement for a FireWire connection from the USPA.

BTW, the new Skydiver's Competition Manual with all the current rule changes effective May 1, 2003 is available at the USPA web site. The SCM is a two part download if you want everything.
