In your opinions which is more suitable for skydiving photography... 35mm or digital?

Depends on your application; art or student?

A lot of high-end "art" freefall photography is now being done in digital -- look at any recent issue of "Parachutist" or Skydiving Magazine" and I can guarantee you that a lot of what you're seeing is digital. For special events, like the recent dropzone.com boogie, digital lead the way. Mike McGowan and myself were both shooting digital. HERE is an example of some of my work.

However, for student situations (tandem & AFF) 35mm film is still pretty much the standard. Some people are making inroads into how to go about dealing with digital for student operations. Some folks are burning cd-roms and others are offering print services via the internet, but the majority of folks are still just handing the student an exposed roll of film -- afterwhich, it becomes the student's responsibility to deal with it.

Yep, I agree. I think PurpleBadger had already made the decision on it.

I jump a film for tandems. And digital for most fun jumps and shoot film depending on what I'm trying to do. IE, best quality or true fisheye out of my fish eye lens. ;)

The one problem I see with the Sony F717 is burried down on the "specifications" page on sonystyle.com:

Burst Mode: 3Frames, 2fps

I read this as saying that the fastest this camera can shoot is 2 frames per second, up to a maximum of 3 frames. EI, it'll take 3 shots in 1.5 seconds.

By comparison, the Canon 10D shoots continuously at 3 frames per second, and can burst up to 9 frames per second.

This means you can shoot off 9 seconds during the exit with the Canon, but only 3 with the Sony.... You'll probably miss that killer shot with the Sony.

The Canon 10D costs about twice as much... But people (not me) seem to be having good experiences with it.

You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Me too, but I use a 20mm. I follow Quade around and copy all his stuff. The pace at which you can improve your photography is several orders of magitude faster with digital. I have always been into photography, over 25 years. The climb in my skills since gettin my 10D is a match for everything that came before. It's like being a Sports Illustrated photographer with a monkey handing you a loaded camera every 36 frames and then immediately doing contact sheets.

With a gig card, my 10D holds over 400 photos. And no chemistry. God I hated chemical developing.

I just have to be careful when I have my film camera on to not blow a bunch of photos. You only get about 38 from film. You get OVER 10 TIMES MORE doing digital, and it costs nothing to see them. Dump the chaff and keep shooting.

Uh, yeah. Digital.

I'm prepared to deal with the flames from the traitors Deuce and Quade, but keep in mind that with digital you will never get the absolute best aspect of photography - that great smell when you open the film canister.

Of course, that smell is pretty expensive if you want to shoot 400 frames per day like Deuce. Of course, Deuce's camera body cost a TON.

I'm kind of kidding here. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. For whatever reason I just love the IDEA of film over digital. I can't put my finger on exactly why, but I am really into shooting film. OTOH, at the stage in my film career when most photogs are buying an enlarger and building a darkroom in the back of their house, I am gonig to use that $ for a quality PC, photo software, and a killer digital body.

I think you'll be happy either way. What's important is that you capture moments that make you happy, and either format will do that for you.

I love it.

Profligate. That's the word for shooting digital stills.

Gluttonous. It's like eating your favorite food all day and not getting full and not getting fat.

But after the last couple thousand pictures I've shot, I'm getting tired of deleting them and I'm taking much better pictures in the camera, and fewer.

And I don't need a thermometer, trays, sinks, and a dim red light.

My camera body (10D) cost about the equivalent of 6000 developed prints. Developed prints are your indication of skill. "Look at this one, F-stop, shutter speed, depth of field, lighting, angle" etc.

Yes. But digital can do that for you right in the plane.;)
