Travelling with DV tapes

Recommended Posts

I did a search and couldn't find anything, but I am sure it must have been discussed at some point. Maybe I didn't use the right search criteria....

Anyway, any suggestions with travelling with my camcorder and mini-DV tapes. Doesn't the X-ray machine at the airport security check damage the film inside the tapes? Thanks in advance for your help.

X-ray machines, especially now, absolutely have the possibility of fogging your regular 35mm film. There isn't a whole lot you can do about it either. You used to (before September 11) be able to put 35mm film into a lead lined bag and put it in your checked luggage and that was a pretty safe bet, but now . . . forget it. All that's going to do is piss off some TSA weenie.

As for miniDV tapes, the only damage anyone is likely to get is from the magnetic fields powering the motors of the conveyer system and that is not very likely either. The x-rays themselves are pretty harmless to video tape.

Depending on how much video tape I was worried about (million dollar shot?), I'd be tempted to just put it in my shirt and pants pockets, but normally, I'd just let the whole thing slide through the system and watch the TSA weasles try and figure out what the heck the helmet looking thing was used for. ;)

You're probably going to get hand searched and asked to turn stuff on anyway. Photos of you in freefall wearing the helmet might help explain things. :)

I traveled to Perris with film and Dv tape and I put it in a large freezer bag and caried in in a fanny pack. when I got to the checkpoint i told them it was film and asked for a hand search. All went well, no fuss, no hassle. they did do the explosive swab teast one time but no big deal. if the DV tape wasn't sealed they just opened up the carrier and looked quickly at the tape and moved on. I moved through quicker than most people since they have a dedicatd person set aside for hand search a while everyone else goes throguh the normal process.

I have traveled worldwide with DV tapes, and even in the last year (I travel for work 100%) no damage has occurred. Like another poster advised. If I had some really great footage that couldn't be reshot I would hand carry it, but thats just to look paranoid.
I don't take my shoes off either!
