What size lens to get?

Recommended Posts

Okay, I have read a lot of posts about wide angle lenses and am still confused. What size lens do you use for these three situations and which manufacturer? This is only for freeflying.
1-very close flying where one is taking docks, etc.
2-filming close to someone who is learning so they can use the video as a tool, say 2-10 feet.
3-Filming a freefly dive from the outside.
Thanks for the help. Newbie camera user.

Pretty simple, NOT!!

This is what I did eventually, what you want and other people think you want are two different things. This is what you do:

Take the camera to a lens shop. Ask the dude behind the counter to fit various tipe of lenses and then see the effect. Focus on something and see the difference. With one lens you'l be able to see the whole shop and with the next the blackheads on the salesman's nose.
Now take those hard earned bucks and give the nice man the lott!!! I feel, really I do!;)
And all I wanna do is fly.....

I spent about 3 hours researching prior posts last night and while I found a lot of very useful information, these questions remained. I have some general ideas about what lenses might work, but I want it to be verified by people who have been flying video for a while. Thanks for the help and the lens will be for a Sony pc-105

Nope, but I tend to be tight on the 4way, but I mostly film 4way, so I get bored, and I have seen every block, and random hundreds of times, I like the wide angle so I can get close as hell and fill the screen, but on actual competition jumps I stay back a little so if the team spreads apart I have a little reaction time to get up and keep them in the screen. Ive had teams key something when they werent even close to each other.

I never considered using the .03 for 4way until I saw Rickster using it. He loves it, and his video is awesome,

I own the .05 it just isnt wide enough, I actually got it even trade for a kenko .42 with Graham Harding from Majik. He said the same thing I thought I would use it for Tandems. It actually isnt a bad lens for tandems and such, but Im so used to the .03 that I use it all the time. Dag einer from the Norgies also uses a .3 without zooming, but he had to change the way he flew a lot also. Its not really that much closer, but you do have to work a little harder. Im 100% sure in a jump or two you would have no problem with the .3 as your lens for 4 way.
