Bonehead Optik

Recommended Posts

Does anyone use the Optik for filming tandems and 4-ways, etc. or just for frefly video. Is the flat top of the helmet large enough to mount a typical SLR without too much camera sticking over the edges?

I am a brand new camera flyer so I don't know how much I can input here. I've been jumping an OPTIK for a little while now and have been wearing it all the time for all sorts of things. I film tanems in it occasionally and the sidemount does a great job. I've also had great results filming 3-Ways out of our 182.

I don't jump with an SLR so I won't be able to anwer any of those questions.

you mean a one piece thing? My bonehead rachet chin cup is plenty solid.

Yes, a 'one piece thing'. A full face helmet. No rachets are detachable pieces. I, for one, would be one of the first in line to buy one.

Does anyone mount both video and a still camera on an optic? Seems a side mount video would be fine, but a top-mount still camera might stick out a bit far on the sides. What about shooting tandems and big-ways in this config? You can't easily angle up the top mount camera like you can with your side mount.

I have both video and stills on mine. I made a bracket that bolts under the d-box and hangs over the front of the helmet. The still camera is mounted inverted on the front. Works just fine.

I just shoot everything at zero degrees. It's not that big a deal. If you want to pitch your camera up you can do that by shimming the front of your dbox up with some washers.

Bonehead makes a "Z Bracket" which does exactly the same thing for $45. You can check it out at Para Gear.www.paragear.com

I have an optik with a D-Box. Its a very clean comfortable helmet. Nicely balanced. I don't have a Z Bracket for it yet, but that will come in the near future.

Look at the Flat Top Narrow, very close to what you are asking about Lori.

Yeah, I went to Bonehead and look at the model. It's too wide for my liking. In fact, it's the exact same size as the Flat Top Pro. The only difference is that they narrowed the top for a front/back combination instead of the side by side factor.

I want and need something lighter and a more narrow in the cranium setting.

If you plan on getting one of these you should act fast. Bonehead no longer makes them and I would guess that Paragears stock is limited.
