dsbbreck 0 #1 September 11, 2003 Has anyone else had a problem with the Conceptus Tounge switch. I've recently had 2 have shorts in the wiring where the wire connects to the switch. Conceptus' customer service is excellent. They have sent me a new switch. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem.David "Socrates wasn't killed because he had the answer.......he was killed because he asked the question." quade 4 #3 September 11, 2003 As great as the Conceptus switches are (and they ARE great) ANY wire that gets twisted and flexed and abused as some of ours do will eventually have some issue. How old were these switches and how much had they been used?quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
Deuce 1 #4 September 11, 2003 I had a brand new one that failed because the rubber coating broke right at the switch. By the red dot.
teamhypoxia 0 #5 September 11, 2003 I had two consecutive switches go bad on me at Rantoul. One lasted two days, the other a day. They seem to be changing the way they make them. I've had three so far and they were all a little different. The first was enclosed entirely with rubber and did not have any sort of tactile "click" when pressed (the only way you knew it worked was if you could hear or feel the camera). It worked for over a year. The first one I got at Rantoul had an exposed button in the middle (you could see metal between the red button and the surrounding rubber) and you could feel it click. That one lasted about two days. The second one, a replacement for the first, was similar to the very first one I had (entirely enclosed with rubber), had a tactile click to it, and failed almost immediately when tiny pinholes in it allowed spit to short it out. I'm a bit hesitant to buy another until I'm certain they've worked out the bugs. It's funny that the very first one I had, presumably the oldest, worked the longest. I've since sent a PM to the Conceptus nick on these forums but have yet to recieve a reply
diverds 0 #6 September 11, 2003 I have had a string of bad tounge switches over the last 5 months. Most have lasted about 5 to 10 jumps, and this is taking good care of them(no twisting or pulling on the wire or biting on the switch). 2 other camera flyers at my dz also use the conceptus switches and they have both had failures as well. That said, I want to say that Conceptus' customer service has been second to none. Any time there has been a problem Ed has sent me out a new switch right away. He has been very helpful and prompt in his replys, and because of this I am going to stick with them. As one of the above posters said, it appears that they are trying out some new designs. I have had at least 2 different types of switchs and maybe 3. Once I get one that has the bugs worked out it will be well worth the hassles I am going through now because when the switches are working properly they are fantastic. Your best bet would be to email Ed directly at switches@conceptusinc.com. He is a great guy and will not let you down. Skydive Radio

miller 0 #8 September 12, 2003 We've had a string of tongue switches go bad as well. Our solution that has worked very very well: Go to the local toy store and buy a bag of water ballons (little tiny balloons that when filled with water are about the size of a baseball). When you get a NEW tongue switch (ie one with no known holes) wrap one of them little water balloon / tonge switch condoms on it. It's worked for four of us, and we'd all had problems before. Also, they will stay on, so don't wrap tape around the open end because they will inflate slightly on the ride to altitude if there's no where for the expanding air to go.
