Tandom Video Flying

Recommended Posts

Im starting out flying video for tandoms and im having problems getting the "Money Shot". Seems I keep ending up to far away. I was thinking, do flying wings cause you to back slide since they will raise your upper body higher then your lower body?? do I have to compensate with my legs. Any other help or tips would be great.

Yup, wings can make you back slide. To get that great shot you need to get sitting up about 45 degrees or so under the tandem. The best way I have found to do that, with a wing suit, is to cup more with the wings, but keep your forearms angled downward to create some forward drive. When it sits you up onto your knees use your lower legs for the rest of the forward drive you need to stay under them. If you are getting too floaty you may need a tighter suit, or maybe even weights. It took me a bit of practice before I was able to get all the way under a tandem with the drogue completely in view behind them. Of course if you can butt fly with the tandem you would be in that sweet spot naturally. I don't have any pics to show for examples, but I bet some will get posted by some other vidiots soon.
Hope this helps!

Practice, practice, practice man. That's what it takes. Be aggressive, yet careful. YOu want to get as close as you can without colliding with them. Get under them without taking their air.
Before you know if you'll be getting the "money shot" without even thinking about it.

It's hard. I think it's harder than 4 way. With a big wingsuit, you dig your arms down, like in a push-up, and drive forward with your legs. You want to see that chest strap. Some of the pros can get so deep they get the drogue, but most of those folks are sitflying.

It's fun though. Fun Vampires!

hey Gimp...
what's the matter, you're not running into them yet??? i'm shocked! :o

I don't know about a wingsuit, I've only ever flown camera in my freefly suit. I have a good range in it. I must say though, getting that shot is hard and takes practice. Like Duece said, be aggressive. You won't get better without it. Also, remember, the video is about the passenger, not the Tandem Instructor, while it's nice to have both perfectly in frame and faces visible, sacrifice the good angle of the instructor and get the face shot of the passenger. Like Miami said, you need to get down below the tandem and look up. So start stretching your back and doing yoga or whatever, cause you will be sore if you are really down there looking up. I am always sore after a day of tandem videos, way moreso than fun jumps, no matter what type of fun jumps they are. You should be a couple feet below them, looking up, to get the good money shot of the passenger. Then it's fun to mix it up, float and get a quick shot, dock on the tandem and spin them, pop up and get the drogue, do a barrel roll (i'm still not perfect at keeping them in the frame on that one yet...)

Practice. Practice. Practice. and then, practice some more. I'm still trying to get better, tighter, more creative...

Being a freeflyer helps on exits, but your flying a hard belly slot for most of the dive, unless you get on your back/butt...
I've only flown sit with a few really reall heavy guys.

ok peace

Are you taking both video and stills or just video?. How many tandems have you swooped so far?.

I am only doing video now because i dont have a still camera yet....and i have only about 15 tandom video jumps....like i said just starting out.

i understand the whole...it about the passenger not the TM and being below and looking up.

Hey Gimp,

If I could add one thing, it'd be to work on front float style exits once your'e ready (assuming your'e jumping the otter). Reason being is if you hang out on the camera step, you usually get the back of their head/rig...MY favorite money shot is the one when they first step out, your underneath them and you get the plane, TM, and the passenger right in your face..that o $hit look on the passenger's face is PRICELESS. This is a more advanced exit than rear, but I'm telling you it can make all the difference in the world regarding a good vid vs. a great vid. Plus after exit you have much less separation, when done right. I have, however, had some REALLY good TM's that can position that shot for you if you are exiting from the step....only time I'm back there now is if they are going to cut a few backloops right out the door. Have fun, be safe.

O, I'm at (real) work so I can't post a pic of the exit shot mentioned above, but if you still jump at Raeford, you have some of the BEST at your disposal, shadow some of them and see what they're doing.

Blairs is dead on about that. Thats is how I do my tandem vids and those first few seconds after exit on the students face are the $$. Get with me at the DZ and I'll show you what I know.;)
