Still mount on Hawkeye- Help Please

Recommended Posts

I am about to try an add a still camera to my helmet. I am flying a Hawkeye with a TRV-22 in a Bonehead d-box (I have the taller, rounded one... they make 2 of them, the other is square and boxy). It looks like for now I am going to add a Canon Elph LT with a tongue switch. This camera is very small, very light, and takes respectable, serviceable photos. (Long term I am getting a flat-top pro and adding a Rebel, but that is another matter.)
Any suggestions on the best way to mount the Elph? Ideally I would like to add an aluminum plate under my d-box that would extend out and down with a small platform for the Elph.
Comments? Suggestions? Flames?
Thanks in advance.

Wow, how ironic, I came here to pose the exact same question, sorta.

I just purchased a Hawkeye TM, since I finally decided that my System 3 was just too snagadelic. I love the helmet. It fits me like a glove! The chin cup seems to be in the perfect place, unlike the BH Optik which just didn't fit my face profile as well.

Here's my problem though. I want to keep jumping my TRV, that's why I got the TM, but I don't want to lose my EOS for all my jumps, just some of them. After I get a few more wingsuit jumps under my belt, I'm going to add the camera back into the mix, but without stills, for now at least. I'd still like to be able to hook it up for the occasional RW jump though.

Does anyone know of a mount system that can be quickly and easily removed, without messing with the video mount too much?

I know, it sounds impossible to me, and just might be, but I figured this would be the best place to ask.

p.s. My Hawkeye does not have a cutaway system on it, yet. Any suggestions there? Do you think the BH cutaway system would work on a Hawkeye?

Oh, those will work fine for the video. Too bad that's not what I need it for. The video D-box fills the top platform. I'm looking for a plate that will extend out from the flat top, to hang the EOS (and eventually 10d) upside down, yet be easily removable. I really don't want a big chunk of aluminum or steel jutting out from the front of my head when the stll isn't being used.

I'm busy sketching possible quick release still mounts, where the entire mount quick releases from under the video, allowing the video to be seated in the same position no matter if the still plate is there or not.

Rev, why didn't you get an LT? You could get a stroboframe mount on there and then fair it with fiberglass, that's be my solution if you insist on staying with the top, instead of the left-top.

1st off, I tend to like the center of gravity centered on my spine. It just feels, well, better on opening to me. So that was the choice maker on the TM. Well, that and the fact that the gear store at Skydive Chicago had them at 10%off, and I didn't see any LT's.

OK, what I'm toying with right now is an aluminum plate and 2 stroboframes. Helmet, stroboframe base, stroboframe top, aluminum plate/bracket for stills, stroboframe base, stroboframe top, D-Box. In that specific order. Then in order to remove the stills, all I'd need to do is pop both stroboframes, pull out the still bracket, and re-attach the d box to the helmet. Looks quite good, in theory, on paper. Will let you know how it works out.

Shit, it already has like 300% less possible snag points.
