There's video cards and there's video cards... One is used to display stuff on your monitor, the other is used to capture video.

If you mean the display card, usually what comes onboard is inferior to separate cards, but it may still fit your needs. Depends on the specs (chip, memory, ...).

A capture card is always a separate card, unless you mean onboard firewire.

If you have firewire and don't need to do realtime editing I don't think a capture card is necessary, but then, I do my editing on a laptop and I don't complain ;)

If you are talking about the display card i would consider a card that can handle two monitors. That way you will have a very large desktop and plenty of room for premiere.
If you only edit small projects its probably not worth the money or effort to get this feature.
I was told that display cards do not effect the rendering speed in premiere and other applications.
If it does not cost anything you are the product.

Franco..your right the video adaptors that allow multiple monitors will not help rendering speed, but working on two monitors makes a huge difference to the speed you can edit at.B|

Saskia nailed it there. The firewire on your mobo will do everything a basic IEEE1394 adaptor will do.
If you really must have realtime, then get ready to dig deep. If I were you, I'd play about with Premiere until you know whether the 'proper card' is actually what you want. Its easy enough to pop one in later on.
