D Box & PC 101 malfunction

Recommended Posts

Hi, i had the old style two piece d box mounted on the side of my hawkeye helmet for my pc101.
I say had because on opening, i looked between my legs and watched it hit the ground from 2 thousand feet.
I saw the outer shell of the d box spinning off to my right, it seemed to still be in tact..
When i got on the ground both the horizontal and vertical straps were still in place. Don't know what happened, wondering if it's happened too others? Never found the camera. Bought another PC101 recently, gong to try the new style D Box.

Kind of funny I had a similar incident last week. After an uneventful skydive, pitched the PC and waited for the canopy to do its thing. Next thing I know I am in line twist up to my ass. The risors were spun up behind my head forcing my head down. My helmet is a bonehead mindwarp with a large bonehead D box. I am thinking when my head was forced down from the risors, I hit my chin cup on the three rings causing it to unfasten. As the line twist spun out it ripped my helmet right off my head. It was the most sickening feeling I have ever experienced. I watched my helmet spin down from 3k feet. The craziest thing was it landed 10 feet from dead center in our student target area. I would have never believed it if I had not seen it with my own eyes. The camera I was flying was the new PC-330. I had just made the first payment on it. I am dealing with my insurance right now trying to get it replaced. Needless to say that was an expensive skydive that day. My helmet just had a chincup. Does anyone run the factory strap with the chin cup? Or is that to much to get off when shit goes south?

You dont't get to choose how you're going to die. Or when.......You can only decide how you're going to live........NOW.

Yeah, I use both. It has kept the helmet on my melon 3 times from the ratchet deal popping loose from my own 3 rings, and getting kicked in the chin on exit. And once, the ratchet broke in the plane before exiting for a tandem vid, but having the strap saved me from NOT being able to jump.

BUT, the reality is that if I ever an issue, I'm doomed. I'm pretty sure my kneck would be broken if anything ever hung up anyway, so I'm willing to live (die) with the way it is right now.

A quick cut-away system is the way to go, but I don't have one.
