freeflir29 0 #1 January 30, 2004 Someone tell me if I have this straight. To go camera to camera I need 4 pin to 4 pin. Camera to capture card looks like 4 pin to 6. Is this right?
Deuce 1 #2 January 30, 2004 Depends on the card, Clay. My Sony computer uses the same firewire input as my PC120.
GeorgeKat 0 #3 January 30, 2004 Generally right. Some PC connections are also 4 pin, but you can easily tell. If your camera connection looks the same as your capture card then they are both 4-pin, if they look totally different then the capture card is 6 pin. quade 4 #4 January 30, 2004 If you're like most of us, you'll eventually end up with all the different combinations just to be able to do everything. I found some FireWire cables the other day at Fry's in SoCal and I was amazed how inexpensive they've gotten. $7 for a 6ft 4-4 pin. I remember when folks were selling them for closer to $40.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
GeorgeKat 0 #5 January 30, 2004 I did get caught out once when I mail ordered some very cheap fire wire hard drive cables and they didn't work camera to camera. I never investigated but suspect there's two formats, one a crossover of the other. I'm sure you know what you're buying quade. I share this as a general caution to others. vdschoor 0 #6 January 30, 2004 I haven't gotten caught out with cables that don't work, but I just paid 25 bucks at BestBuy for a 6ft 4pin to 6 pin firewire cable. Got myself a new 160Gb firewire disk, now my video runs smooth when I edit it Iwan
Deuce 1 #7 January 31, 2004 My new one is USB, if it's good enough for Billvon, it's good enough for me. Had to put 1.5 gig of RAM in the freaking machine to make it do the right stuff, but heck, it's only money I don't have
vdschoor 0 #8 January 31, 2004 I can't comment on the money.. but the reason I didn't go with USB is .. performance. USB still uses up the CPU, firewire doesn't 1.5 Gig of RAM???? I am getting along just fine using 256 in my laptop... I should upgrade, but my next upgrade is a real one.. Mac. Iwan
freeflir29 0 #9 January 31, 2004 Quotebut I just paid 25 bucks at BestBuy for a 6ft 4pin to 6 pin firewire cable. After heading to best buy expecting to get RAPED for a cable...They tried but I ain't givin up 39.99 for a Monster cable. I went online to www.pccables.com and ordered a 4-6 AND a 4-4 for 17.83 I think it was....WITH SHIPPING. They are both 6 ft cables too.
vdschoor 0 #10 January 31, 2004 Ah well.. I know they are cheaper on the internet, but I needed the cable NOW.. he he.. Time is money Iwan
webracer 0 #11 January 31, 2004 in general you are right. I have the option of 4 or 6 pin on desktop, but on my laptop, I only have 4 pin. I buy Sony brand (or JVC, sony makes their cables) cables, but I buy them in Japan, HongKong, or Seoul for about $12 each, instead of the $40 they want here or in Europe.Troy I am now free to exercise my downward mobility. jeremyneas 0 #15 February 1, 2004 shit...when the pc7 hit the shelves, i had to take the bus into NYC and plunk down $60 for my 4 to 4, somewhere on 42nd street.
dragon2 2 #16 February 1, 2004 Also, although these are really new, there are firewire800 cables which are totaly different again. Mostly seen on Macs, firewire800 IS available for PC. We have a LaCie 400 Gb Firewire 800/USB2 disk here in Thailand. And a Firewire800 PCMCIA card. Fast!! ciel bleu, Saskia

jeremyneas 0 #20 February 3, 2004 Yes...NOW...then it was a little harder to find. Most electronic stores never heard of it. But my adventures through Manhatten to find my cable proved worth it.
