Premiere, Audition, and Effects

Recommended Posts

A friend of mine just gifted me with the entire software suite. Unfortunately, my computer is old enough to freeze when capturing the video.

Can anyone recommend an affordable video editing computer? I guess I am thinking of spending not much more than 1.5 - 2G's for it; but, a lot less than that is always nice too.

My current system is a DELL 1.8ghz with about 600mb ram (but the ram speeds suck at 133mhz) running the nvidia 128mb and this seems to be holding up quite well.

Some of the latest PC's (with Xeon procs) are going for much more than that. Perhaps there is a distributor or company that someone here could recommend.

ps. I will not do Apple - even though they are the most powerful thing going. too expensive and proprietary for me.

slow enough to freeze ? my first editing PC was a PIII-733Mhz, with 256Mb or ram .... never froze on me. dunno. 1.8 Ghz with 600Mb of ram seems quite adequate for me (although for effects you might wanna go full blast with RAM).

If you're looking for cheap ways to get a strong computer - my best bet for you is to buy the components and build it yourself - also consider AMD Athlon MP/XP CPUs (I'm running a dual AMD MP with 512 MB and its running perfectly)

again - if you're experiencing issues with your current setting (which I dont believe you should) try to figure out why it's happening ? are you running other tasks (outlook ... word... whatever ... just guessing) simultaniously ? those editing apps like to be left alone, and use all the resources you can give them. try to clean up your computer - also defrag your harddrive (you ARE using a separate harddrive for captured footage right ?).

hope this helps.

I'm quite literate when it comes to computer systems. The AMD processors are having issues with Adobe applications.

I'm thinking that the freezing is being caused by a bottleneck in memory speeds, not memory amounts. Defragging the drive may help...hmm Yeah, I'm going to need a slave drive pretty soon. And another screen if I can afford it.

Just hoping on the best advice for finding an inexpensive, yet, adaquate system.

I did hear and read that AMD processors are not on the "compatibility" list of adobe, avid, and some other brands, but check to see which cpu they refer to. I've had my dual MPs for 2 years now , in which I've upgraded from Premiere 6.5 to Avid Xpress Pro with not a single problem with either. I'm also running AE, and recently started working with Encore (which is ok , but not much more) with again - not a single issue ever. I know for sure that older AMD cpus have issues (lots of them) but the MP are pretty stable and reliable (and so I've heard of the XP).

again - I think all you need with your setup is to add/replace your memory and boost it up, and add a secondery drive for captueing footage. as far as processor power - if you're on a budget - I really dont see a reason to replace the entire unit.

I agree with skyfly, here.

If you are on a budget, upgrade what you have. Save up for a little while longer and then do it right - not just the minimums. The Adobe suite can certainly have "issues" with AMD chipsets. Many of these issues have workarounds or simply putting up with certain peculiarities.

Don't be fooled by the belief the G5 is king of the hill. It may be the fastest personal computer out there - for now. It is NOT the fastest editing workstation. If you want to spend the loot for it, a multiprocessor Xeon will cruise past a Mac. Intel is still, also, the best cost effective solution in many applications.

As far as power/$, the multiprocessor AMDs are quite potent. They are definitely in a league for computer savvy types. As you seem to be a computer literate type, a bit of research into building a system yourself would help you keep your budget and get something that is 100% compatible.

Hey ther. I just attended an Adobe Video Solutions Seminar. Here is what your PC needs to be:

Windows XP only
Either Dual processors Zion 3.06Ghz or......
single processor P4 3.0 Ghz or better with a real-time video card like the Matrox RT.X100
1Gb Ram, Lots of HD space (i have 3x120Gb HDs)
DVD rw is nice too since you have Encore (very nice program)

After Effects 6.0 rules. This new Adobe shit really is awsome.

AMD is NOT the way to go, unfortunatly, compatability issues.

I have a Vaio notbook, XP, 512ram at 100mhz, amd 1ghz, and it runs premiere 6 fine. So your issues may be more than buying bigger and better. Mine is not optimum, but ok. You may try shutting down some processes, or tweaking your config.
