Jumpmunki 0 #1 February 4, 2004 i am getting into freeflying and am also looking at flying camera when i have the required skills blah etc.... is it better to sidemount or top mount? which mounting type does what? why is one better than the other? would top mounting prove a bit of an aerodynamical nightmare while freeflying? cheers in advance Wayne
diablopilot 2 #2 February 4, 2004 Quoteis it better to sidemount or top mount? Nope. It's a matter of personal preferance, do a search to see what people have said before about each. Quotewould top mounting prove a bit of an aerodynamical nightmare while freeflying? Absolutly now. If the addition of a camera prevents you from flying on whatever axis you wish, or in whatever mode of flying your interested in, you're not ready to fly the camera.---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. I completely agree here....and the only real diffrence between top or side mount is riser exposer to the camera....obvieously a side mount will have a greater chance of getting caught by the risers. Now I have never had a problem with my top or side mount and risers."Professor of Pimpology"~~~Bolas
bryce 0 #5 February 5, 2004 top mount: lower chance of riser strike, easier access to all sides of camera, (lanc port inboard, easier to change tapes) Side Mount: Camera is closer to your heads center of gravity less leverage on a hard opening, and is closer to your eyeball (closer to what you're looking at) so you're not as susceptible to parallax. 3ringheathen 0 #6 February 6, 2004 I more or less agree with the other posts so far. I'd add that if you are primarily jumping out of 182s or other cramped airplanes, a side mount is more practical. I jump a side mount for that reason, but now that a Caravan is likely to be available most of the time, I'd certainly consider top mount in the future. --------- My dream set up involves a PC style camera(commonly used in sidemounts) that can be layed on its side with the image somehow recorded as right side up. Something like that would be super clean mounted flat on the top of the helmet. It'd be sweet if Sony made the orientation selectable, or if you could open up the camera and rotate the CCD 90 degrees or something. I'm afraid to even open up my camera to see if it's possible. If anyone dares, let me know how it turns out. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote.
