Have a look at this page for the codec. http://www.moviecodec.com/codecdownload/If it does not cost anything you are the product. Constantly newer methods of encoding the video clips are being developed, and so for everyone else to watch these clips they need to be decoded. A Codec is a decoder for a certain video file. So a Codec pack is a bunch of different codecs giving you a better chance of actually having the right one you need for the particular video clip you've downloaded I personally have alway found the K-lite codec pack to be very good (up to date) as stated above.
