Shotgun 1 #1 March 30, 2004 Just curious... Do dropzones ever hire people just to edit video, or do the camera flyers always edit their own videos?
jdhill 0 #2 March 30, 2004 I know of at least one that does... not sure exactly what they make, $4-$5 per edit or so. JAll that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
natebanton 0 #3 March 30, 2004 At the dropzone I'm ususally at, the camera fliers almost never edit their own videos. The DZ hires someone to edit them on the DZ's equipment. One benefit is that the finished products are all very similar. You don't have customers complaining that their friend's video was cooler than theirs. The camera fliers just use more than one tape throughout the day. When they come down from a load, they drop off one tape with the editor, put another one in, and away they go. Especially if they have a turn rig and are paying for pack jobs. "They wouldn't be homeless if they had a tandem rating"---Stan

stateofnature 0 #5 March 30, 2004 Skydance Skydiving in Davis CA did (does?). But the Video man can edit it if they bring their own equipment.
Shotgun 1 #6 March 30, 2004 That's good to know. Thanks for all the answers... What software do you use? I've been teaching myself to use Premiere and just started thinking it would be fun to edit skydiving videos (but I'm not a camera flyer). When I get better at the editing, maybe I'll check with Perris or Elsinore about it...
quade 4 #7 March 30, 2004 Perris has specific video editors, but they do NOT use a non-linear editing system such as Premier. It's much faster for them to use analog tape based editing for the students and tandems.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
Shotgun 1 #8 March 30, 2004 QuoteIt's much faster for them to use analog tape based editing for the students and tandems. Ah, that makes sense... Do they use Avid Xpress? Edit: Or do I mean Avid Media Composer???? Not sure which is which, but do they use Avid?
Deuce 1 #9 March 30, 2004 We use an analog board editor at Byron, and the editor makes $5 per edit, I think.
AndyMan 7 #10 March 30, 2004 Chicagoland has a communal editor. $5/edit. _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
flypunk 0 #11 March 30, 2004 most of the operations I know use mixing boards, and then its mostly straight out equipment, sound boards, vcrs cameras etc, no computers at all. ...
JayhawkJumper 0 #12 March 30, 2004 Avid Express and Media Composer are also NLE's. Linear editing is basically VCR to VCR with a mixer and/or titling board in between. I doubt you'd find any DZ with a media composer, there may be some jumpers who use Express DV or Express Pro though. The video guys are our DZ use premiere, and it usually goes pretty quick, they have everything already layed out and just drop in the clips.
