Sony PC-105 - what lens needed?

Recommended Posts

I have just purchased a RAWA Imagem Double helmet and the Sony PC-105 camera. I mainly freefly, sit and every so often do relative work. I jump in Florida. I would like to know:

1) What lens should I buy? I have been told a wide angle lens such as the 30mm ROYAL Diamond .3x? Is this the best lens to have?

2) I assume this lens will fit 'flush' with the RAWA d-box?

3) Do I need any other type lens like a UV filter?

4) Where is the best place to buy any suggested lens?

Any information on lens choice, exact use and place of purchase would be much appreciated. Thanks.

The first step is to figure out what sort of video and flying you're going to be doing.

Tandem videos, FF videos, RW videos, all around flying, for fun, for money, etc. Those are all factors that you have to figure out.

For instance, I'm putting together a setup for my personal enjoyment, not for making money, and I'm going to go with a .38, since I want a wide angle lens, but don't want it so wide that if I'm not on top of the person, they look 100yds away.

SWEETNESS!

I just got an email from Claudio at RAWA, they have to make me the cambox for the Royal lens DIAMOND 0.3x 30mm for Sony PC-105 because the cambox is different than the regular cambox for the Sony PC-105. Good point to know.

Also, the STEALTH 0.5x 30mm and the DIAMOND 0.3x 30mm are the same exact sizes so they are interchangeable, I just confirmed this with the people at Royal lens.

thanks!

I use a 0.3 Redeye and Seimax 0.42 lense with my PC105.
Both fit great in the Blackboxes I make with the Redeye 0.3 being flush with the front of the box. I use the 0.3 for inside formation shots and handycam and the Seimax for the majority of the rest.
The 0.42 also has the same field of view as my 24mm still lense. You can check out www.cookiecomposites.com to see how the 0.3 fit into our Blackboxes.
I'm also looking forward to trying out a new 0.25 Blackeye lense coming out soon.

So which do you use for BASE?that were my Q

Base handy cam and belly mount a 0.3 lense is most commonly used.
I have seen Douggs jump without a lense on helmet mounted stuff with a PC104 but use a 0.3 and 0.42 on 2 way's plus size jumps.

We have the Red Eye 0.3 and the Blue Eye 0.45.

We will offer a special low profile UV filter for them, to be released in the next 6 weeks. This will ensure your lenses remain scratch free for your lifetime.

Back to the main subject here, with a Sony PC-105, for freeflying, it seems that a wide angle lens is a necessity. My question, which is the best wide angle lens? Please let me know your opinions for each one.

1) Royal Lens Diamond .3x 30mm, price $159 - I have been told that this has too much distortion, is that true? I have also been told that it is the best? Hmm?

2) Sony .45?

3) Kenko .43?

4) I heard that there is a lens from Japan named Titanium .45 that is suppose to be great? Anyone know anything about this?

5) Fyi, I have also heard that the best feature of the Royal Diamond .3x 30mm is the size, it´s little so you dont "stress" the camcorder optical system and ring adaptor isn't necessary.

Kenko .43 is good because you can capture the footage with more light, and you have a little more brightnes and vivid colors and it is cheaper also.

6) Are there any other lens that I should consider?

7) Bottom line: what lens should I get?

Diamond .3 for FF, It has a litle barrel distortion normal in a fish eye lens check the videos I gave you all with diamond .3, no black corners either

Waycool industries make the red eye and blue eye and the black eye coming soon, the red eye will be the one you're looking for I think is .3 this lens is more or less the same than Diamond .3

I discard the other lenses just because they are not low profile they will stick out too far for my own taste, in case of a riser slapping your cam you will loose lens and camera, that would not happend or less likely to happen with a low profile lens.

I'm a litle curious about the black eye 0.25 from waycool industries I did not get the red eye of blue eye simply because they are not in the US and the shipping time increases, as soon as the black eye comes out I will get it.

You can always check mine out anytime, and there is a lot of people at the DZ using other lenses I'm sure they will let you check and compare. Ithink Rob from XL uses Kenko .45 and he let me use it when I film those RW jumps.

Short version.......... get the diamond .3

Hope this helps and I see you this weekend

hey guys, long time, eh? ;>

I'm in the market for a pc105 (i'd be getting it but all of the cheap stores are closed for Passover) and assorted accessories.

My question is, would anything less than .43 cause too much distortion, like the .3? At what point would the image be too bizzare looking due to the curvature of the lens?

I saw the Kenko SGW-05 for $24.95 at bhphotovideo.com, so, why not? I don't think I'd like to spend $200 on one of the titanium dealios.

Carlos, you said you were gonna get some of that video to me, I'd love to see how it came out. How about you take some stills with the various lenses you have so we can compare? ;>

Argh. My PC105 came in today. It came with a couple lenses and filters, and they're the wrong size! 37mm! WTF?! I can return them, fortunately. Anywho, the lenses are pretty weak, and I'd rather go with something aftermarket, rather than Sony.

Any recommendations for wingsuit filming?

I would assume you would like a low profile waycool industries have them and the diamond lens .3 or .5 can't go wrong with any of those about the threa size I think sony is 30mm but you can always get a ring adaptor I have it on mine.
I think for you more than anyone need a low profile lens can't be screwing around with the suit and a camera without being safe.

you got the .3 and .5
.3 for FF
.5 for RW

hi Carlos -
I'm all about picking up one or both of these lenses, but i was wondering why the common echo from everybody that you need the .3 for FF and the .5 for RW. are folks so spread out on the FF dives that only the .3 will do to catch everybody? or is the .5 too narrow for a gripped group of freeflyers?

i was also wondering if your statement was general or if there were exceptions. for each of the situations below, which would you pick? (the 0.3 or 0.5...anyone else chime in w/your opinions of these two lenses in the below situations as well...)

- filming a 4-way RW from above
- being part of a 4-way RW (w/camera)
- filming a tandem from 10ft away
- being part of a 6-way zoo FF (w/camera)
- being part of a tight 4-way FF (w/camera)
- filming a 2-way FF from 10-20ft

One last question. I have pretty long legs, 17" femur from my belly to knee in a sitting position. is the 0.3 so wide that my knees will keep popping into view when in a regular sitfly, looking straight ahead? what about the 0.5?

thanks for the advice. can't wait to put my order in! :)b

Look at the images on the brazilian webpage... The "double" case has the camera mountable upside down as well, so you get a headup-view while going headdown. The standard has only the straight up mount

thanks, Chrisky, i kinda thought it might be to "get a headup-view while going headdown". if that's the view you wanted wouldn't you stand or sit fly to get the same view ?

i can't imagine wanting/needing a headup-view while going headdown, is it designed with a specific formation in mind ?

i think with my basic skills i'll stick to the standard straight up mount.

just out of interest, did you find Rawa quite responsive to emails ?

i emailed them last weekend and haven't heard anything from them, it's now wednesday. i also tried calling them and i just got an answer machine ! should i try using their fax number to get through ? any idea which method of communicating is the best way to get through to them ?

I dealt with Claudio like two years back when i got mine and it sometimes took like a couple of days (3-5 max) for an answer, because he was out jumping... B|

Sometimes you can stay in control better going HD with a HD formation, but may want headup oriented video. You can't just flip the image in editing, as you'd have to de-interlace the image first and it would simple be too much a fuzz.
Having 4 same-oriented HD-videos can be more boring than having one headup among them.B|

Apart of that i liked the double mount because i could add my Cameye without a problem.

The double mount extends a little further from the head to compensate for the battery pointing inward in upsidedown orientation, but the cam sits just as snuggly in the case.
