dragon2 2 #1 April 8, 2004 My fav photo shop called me 3 weeks ago: We have your D70 kit, come and get it! So I went there, but.... Oops I forgot to call you... We've sold 2 of the 3 kits to the same guy, one for him, one for his wife. Those got stolen the night after, along with a laptop. So... We gave him your D70.... Thought you wouldn't mind... The first camera that comes in, is mine, but no telling how long this will be Sold my 300D last sunday, so didn't have a camera anymore! Started calling around, found a D70 body at another fav store. Imported body tho, english manual etc. Who cares?! Well the warranty would be handled slightly different; the store itself handles these camera's. Ok, whatever, just give me my camera! Got it When shooting RAW or RAW+JPG, I get 3 shots at 3 fps, then nothing for a loooong time, then one pic, then nothing again. No good... But I think this is normal. However, when shooting any size JPG, the camera starts shooting at a steady 1 to maybe 1.5 fps (guessing, here). What the &*%$? Seems the buffer doesn't work or something... So, right now I have a camera that does take pics, so I can keep it and use it for the time being, hopefully they'll get the next shipment tomorrow or next week.... Then I have to drive for 1 1/2 hours to go exchange it ciel bleu, Saskia
vdschoor 0 #2 April 8, 2004 Saskia, Why did you decide to go with the D70? Did you already have a Nikon SLR system before? I thought you were all "standardized" on Canon? From what I heard there is no straightforward way of using it in freefall, unless you open it up and void the warranty... From the specs it sounded like a nice camera, but from what I read here... dragon2 2 #3 April 8, 2004 Yeah I had a lot of Canon stuff. However, I didn't yet have the lens(es) I'd need for skydiving; most of my lenses were zooms. Tele, mostly, too. So, I'd have to buy a 14 mm fixed or something anyway. (Not gonna use the 300D kit lens) That's a lot of €€€. Also, the 300D bugged me immensely. Never shoulda sold my D30...... Henny's D100 I liked much better then the 300D. Then the D70 previews came. I got a good offer for my 300D. I sold a couple of lenses already, got 5 left of which 3 are practically sold. I got my hands on 2 cheap 2nd hand zooms for Nikon. And now I have the D70. Set up for ground shots (my main lens was a 3.5-4.5 35-105 mm Canon, now I have a 2.8-4 28-105 mm Sigma). Which is what I'll mostly be doing this year at least... I'm too busy with wingsuiting and judging swooop competitions to start serious camera flying. Also I don't have a helmet suitable for both video and stills, and I doubt I even want a digital (heavy) camera on my head anyway.... Whether or not I'll get the remote done after a while, don't know yet. Then I'd need a good helmet and a wide angle lens too. €€€€€........ Gonna get a 18-50 mm zoom for wide angle shots too. So, since this camera is supposed to handle 3 fps for 3 or 4 secs and then 1.5 fps for the rest, it should be perfect for me, at this time. If I get a working camera!!! ciel bleu, Saskia
murrays 0 #4 April 8, 2004 QuoteFrom what I heard there is no straightforward way of using it in freefall, unless you open it up and void the warranty... I saw my first D70 today at lunch time. Solid feeling camera. Metal lens flange. The 18-70 Zoom is fairly robust with a metal lens flange as well. The combination is definitely heavier than the Digital Rebel. I talked to the salesman about the inability to buy a remore release for it and the problems that created for freefall photographers. He came up with the following idea: There is a wireless remote available that appears to work using IR. If you could open the remote and run wires from the switch on the remote to a bite switch you could them mount the remote on the camera where it would be able to trigger the camera. This would not result in opening the camera and voiding the warranty. It seems like it should work. ffejdraga 0 #5 April 9, 2004 *** I have always about doing this, because it would definitely seem easier to accomplish, plus if you screw it up, you have only killed the remote, not the camera. The one question that I would have is if IR would cause a lag, or is it a quick fire? jeff D-16906
dragon2 2 #6 April 12, 2004 Even tho mine isn't as fast as it should be, I did have a lot of fun trying it out, this weekend. I attached some sample pics, none are photoshopped, just cropped & compressed. ciel bleu, Saskia
dragon2 2 #7 April 22, 2004 Ahem. I exchanged my D70 body today, got a new one that WORKED! YAY! But, 10 minutes ago, it did the same thing; 1.5 fps instead of 3 But, after having freaked out a bit, I tried just about every option in the menu. FOUND IT! Long exp. NR was set to ON, I set it to OFF (and I did NOT touch that setting before), and, presto, I have a fast camera again Whoops, now I gotta tell the shop in the morning... Then again, I never touched this setting, don't even know what it's for, exactly. And I shoot 1/320 or 1/500 mostly, so no long exposure?! ciel bleu, Saskia

That noise reduction is only supposed to apply to an exposure of more than...1.3s? It's meant for allowing cleaner night shots. Some value far greater than you're doing in the air. Hopefully it stays right.

Tronko 0 #12 April 23, 2004 Hello there, Has anyone tested the remote control in free fall? I bought the D70 and I would like to know whether the remote works before purchase it. In adition has anyone conected a bite switcher in the remote control? Thanks
garywainwright 0 #13 April 24, 2004 I was talking to a guy in a camera shop in the UK and he told me there is a 2 second delay on the remote control. Is this true?http://www.garywainwright.co.uk Instagram gary_wainwright_uk
dragon2 2 #14 April 24, 2004 QuoteI was talking to a guy in a camera shop in the UK and he told me there is a 2 second delay on the remote control. Is this true? He would have been talking about the infrared remote then, don't know if there's a delay or not, but that one's not usuable, anyway... There's one D100 here with a remote plug build in (done by Nikon), looks the same as this mod. It works just fine! ciel bleu, Saskia
