Camera Helmet Bounce

Recommended Posts

I thought this group might be able to appreciate my loss here. My FTP was ripped off my head a while back during a super hard opening and I lost it all. I've since replaced my setup so I think I can look back and laugh...or at least not cry.

Sucks I know,
I lost a BFT as well on opening and I have seen 4 go in in a years time, thus the mods by Bonehead.
I found my helmet about 2 hours later and the thing was still on with the tape at the end.
It recorded the entire thing to include the going in and never turned off. The funny thing was when it hit it was videoing 1/2 of a leaf and 1/2 of the screen was the sky, the next thing that happened was you could hear a crow squawing. I have about 40 minutes of a leaf on the tape after that. Luckily both the TRV-17 and the Nikkon N-90 were not damaged.

Nice video of it going in.

That sucks bro. I feel your pain.

Seems that there are a few cameraflyers who report losing a camera helmet in flight.

It's be kind of interesting to start a thread and find out just how many camera helmets have 'met their maker' in the years past. And -how- they were lost.

Sorry for your loss, wwhisler!

I lost my camera helmet with my new PC-330 some time ago. I had line twist all the way up be hind my head. I think the three ring snagged my chin cup and released the helmet. I watched it spiral all the way down fro 3K. Funny thing was it landed right on the student target. 10 feet from dead center. This is no bullshit..........

I lost mine when one of my risers hit the release button and yanked my chincup from my Hawkeye on a slammer opening. I think it was charma because I called in sick to work that day and it happened on the first jump of the day:D! Spent the rest of the day searching through the DENSE forest of Deland looking for it but never found it. I really wasn't worried about retrieving the helmet and camera because they probably wouldn't have survived the fall intact...but my ProTrack and ProDytter most likely would have.

ArrowDynamics Inc. was understanding and they gave me another custom Hawkeye at cost to them.

lost mine 4 years ago most probably because one of the snaps was not closed properly. Was my first jump that year, had a JVC900 on top and had the intention to film a CRW team. I was a little nervous because it was my first jump that year, from a new plane (porter) and on a strnage DZ (Gap-france)

Never found the camera nor helmet, some cow in france must be running around with that helmet ;)

Not me, and not a loss, but I have great video of a well known container manufacturer almost losing his sidemount during a record attempt. The helmet came off on exit, he grabs it, then flies to the base and continues the dive much to the amusement of the rest of the 8 way base. He even held onto the thing thru break off and deployment.B|

I absolutely agree. I walked away with a little chuck taken out of my finger and that was it. When I landed everybody was asking where my helmet was...sad. And to top it all off the other videographer on the load asked me if I could help him dub down his video. And I gladly did so and then set out on a quest to find the helmet. I can't imagine how anybody could lose a helmet and have the cameras survive.

I forgot the guy's name, but out at Clewiston FL last weekend, on a load between the two I was on, a guy flying video for a tandem lost his still and video setup to a hard opening as well -- helmet came off.

I'd never been around when something like that happened. They recovered his stuff but I heard it was pretty ruined. I never did get to see it. I felt bad for the tandem passenger. She was scared enough just about doing the skydive. I'm sure she was disappointed that she got herself to do it and then might or might not have been able to have video of it. (I suppose that the video might be good til the impact, and the stills might be good unless the camera case got cracked and exposed the negs.)
