tonyhays 86 #1 April 23, 2004 Is there any advantage to the PC330 over the PC105, other than than the stills? I'm looking at one of these two for a backup camera(I shoot tandem/aff) and was wondering if it's worth the extra 300-400 dollars extra for the 330.“That which can be asserted without evidence, can be dismissed without evidence.”
IvanPeters 0 #2 April 23, 2004 The 330 has a bigger lens and a physically bigger CCD. More light getting in and a bigger capture surface should make for a better quality image. There are also 3 times as many pixels used for video capture (just over 2 million versus 690 thousand) which should also help make for a better quality image. It does produce 10 more lines of video (530 instead of 520) and, if you are interested in going that way, it will do "true" widescreen. I've not seen any 330 footage but the reviews are good. I have seen an obvious quality difference between the sub megapixel cameras and the the megapixel ones so I would expect an improvement on the 330. But it might be getting into the territory of being something most of us mere mortals don't notice. If all you do with your footage is put it onto VHS then there is not much point. VHS can't even handle PC105 quality. If you plan to do DVD's then you might want the quality and/or the widescreen. There's not really anything else it offers for skydiving. It has a customisable menu which I think would be nice. It has an option to disable the automatic shutoff which could be nice for those long go-arounds - but not worth a whole lot of money. The 330 has a new style of A/V connection (does A/V and S-video all in one). This may cause problems dumping down footage if you use a video room pre-equipped with a cable that provides a standard jack plug. It is a Sony-specific plug and I've not seen any adaptors yet. So you will need to fiddle around at the back of the video swapping cables each time. If you use a Cam-Eye, check the location of the LANC on both cameras. If your camera mounts on the left side of a helmet then both are going to be hard to access. Ivan

I use a Century Optics lens (about $230) but is a superior piece of glass while he uses a Kinky lens. this camera and lens are by far the best I have ever used in my 10 years as a commercial freefall camera guy. buy it we'll have to see about longevity! Seems to be the Sony standard for this operation. Ivan P.S. I don't actually have a 330. Just looked closely at it recently before deciding to get a TRV60
 stimpy 0 #7 July 10, 2004 Hi i did a quick summary of sony cameras weights and size (vol) and i thought it may be of interest to y'all: Model , Weight (g) , Width (cm) , Depth (cm) , Height (cm) , Vol (cc) PC109 , 380 , 5.0 , .9.7 , . 9.7 , 470 PC105 , 460 , 5.1 , .9.7 , 10.4 , 514 PC5 .. , 423 , 5.4 , .9.8 , 10.2 , 538 PC101 , 565 , 5.5 , .9.9 , 10.5 , 572 PC9 .. , 482 , 6.1 , .9.9 , 10.5 , 626 PC120 , 580 , 5.7 , 11.3 , 11.8 , 760 PC330 , 540 , 5.9 , 11.3 , 11.9 , 793 PC110 , 570 , 6.0 , 12.2 , 12.2 , 893 i have a pc105, but i think if i were to get another i would probably look at the pc109. the pc330 seems a bit bigger and heavier. just my opinion/tuppence worth ... blues, s-------------------------------------------------- if you jump & drink beer - i'll talk to you !
