Body position query

Recommended Posts

I'm working on flywing camera for tandems and am struggling with body position for good video/flight.

I'm getting coached by our most experienced camera flyer and he's helping a great deal, but figured I would throw it out for other opinions/insight.

What is the best body position (or what position works best for you) for flying camera??

(what I do now:) I'm flying a wingsuit jacket (seperate piece) and FF pants. I've been working on arching more from my pelvis ("squeeze your arse cheeks together") than my trusted RW arch, and getting my legs a little lower than normal for 'sitting up more'.

Any and all tips you can provide...(photos help tremendously too)...would be GREATLY appreciated!!

According to your profile, you jump at Monroe, Georgia and according to ASS's website, they use Vector Tandems.
Videoing Vector tandems is hard work as you have to get below the student to get consistent "money shots" of their faces.
Yes, arching like crazy will help in the short run, but in the longer run, you will need to learn sit-flying or knee-flying to consistently frame the student's face.

I don't think you have to learn sit or knee flying to get a good clear shot at all. Its a matter of learning how to fly in a mantis-like position with your arms more in front of your chest and below your body rather than in a box-man position. This allows you to push more on the air so that you can get your head up a lot more.

I use the same setup as you..... wing jacket and freefly pants to video Vector tandems. You have to use a lot of leg input to counter a backslide with the technique I just mentioned, but I have been getting really good results lately. I taught myself how to do this when I was working with the Fasttrax 4way team getting some outside shots. Its worth a try. Good luck.

Booties might help here...I use my legs alot for subtle turning,, and also when swooping to position, after a long dive. Properly sized booties
generally can't hurt...

I did the body position that Alex is talking about on the few tandems I videoed last year. This year I'm playing with sit flying and I'm getting a lot closer and a much lower angle and I like it a lot more.
Yesterday is history
And tomorrow is a mystery

Newbie Vidio guy here - have a grain of salt -

Think Bulldog - I turn my arms in (Wrists pointed out) so that I can almost hang on my wingsand turn my booties out (duck footed) to almost bootie - fly - seems to work for me and I have alot of control and can get out of there fast if I need to. *shrug*

Any commentys or advice would be welcome here as well.

I had some issues on my first few attempts.. then I adjusted my camera angle up another 10 degrees or so and voila! It fixed everything! BTW.. same setup.. freefly pants, camera jacket.. Vector tandem rigs..

I use a sidemount PC9 and Canon SLRs on top of an old Aviator.. works great!

Problem with adjusting your camera angle up is trying to get good and steep over a 4way now is going to be near impossible. You will have to sit back giving you a less steep view of the formation. You should try to set up your camera helmet to shoot all disciplines and not change it around.

actually not a problem.. it is not that angled.. but it is enough to make the difference between being able to fly the necessary position and just flailing..

another sort of unrelated thing is although I have only one position for my ringsite and it matches the angle for tandems and RW video, I have another setting for both my stills and video for freeflying.. doesn't match my ringsite but it is in the natural position for looking straight ahead. I get decent V/S using that setup without the ringsite.

Have you considered shimming the bracket or whatever the still sits on to match your vid cam?

my still and vid always match.. whether in freefly or tandem / RW position. The ringsite is set just for the tandem / RW mode. Basically, I made a reversible shim for the still.. took the diffence in angles, divided it in half and made the shim. I turn it 180° to switch angles. The vid is infinitely adjustable but i have my 2 settings marked. :)
