GR-D30US for hand mount???

Recommended Posts

I am looking for a "less Expensive" miniDV camera to hand hount for Tandems. Anybody have any suggestions or have they tried a JVC or this one?? I know that Sony is the best overall camera performance wise for skydiving but I do know somepeople have tried different units. I note this one since I can pick a new one up for just under $300, way less then the Sony units. Also I think I might be needing a .3 at most for the wide angle. Has anybody tried a .45 for a hand mount or is it just not enough ??

Any feedback would be appreciated

Well let me broaden out the question.... What camera are people using for hand mounts.... I am guessing it is the miniDV size but what is the general feel for TI's doing this??

I want to try and add it to my tandems this summer and as noted above dont want to spend a ton o $ getting it going. The mount and 0.3x WA are spendy and I would obviously like it to pay for itself through the summer. Dont expect to get paid for it all the time since im not looking to replace traditional video ...

At 5.63 inches long, that JVC GR-D30US is longer than any camcorder I have sewn a hand mount for.
A 4.5 inch SONY is the longest I have sewn for.
The challenge is preventing the camera form overhanging your hand (roughly 4 inches wide at knuckles) far enough to create a snag hazard.
Better to buy a vertical format JVC.

$300 - way less than a sony?

Why not go used? I have picked up both a PC100 and PC9 for $300 - $400 each if you are willing to keep looking.

I'd keep it Sony and suck up the extra $, personally.

I have firewired footage from a JVC camera, and it was practically unusable (for high quality video that is), even after doing image stabilization on it on my NLE.
