Thumbscrew

I knew this day would come -- I lost my thumbscrew. I need this to fixate my camera in my D-box. Does anybody know where I can buy these screws?

Thanks,

pv.

Wrong forum really (shoulda posted in "photography"), but are you talking about the screw that goes into the bottom of your camera? Any photo shop will have that.

Well, I tried 2 photo shops, and in both of them the people had no clue what I was talking about. They carry tripods and all that stuff, but that's not gonna work. I guess I'll have to go to the 'better' photo store.

Thanks for the replies, guys!

Thanks for the profile info.

Right, as we all know how thumbscrews are heavily dependant upon dropzone.com profiles.

How much do thumbscrews usually cost anyways, I was thinking that it might be a good idea to have a few extras around.

1/4" - 20 refers to the thread spacing on the screw (1/4" diameter, 20 threads per inch). This will fit most any DV or still camera.

You can buy 1/4" -20 screws / bolts in various lengths and with various heads at any hardware store.

I went to Home Depot and got a few 1/4" -20, 3/8" length bolts w. hex heads. HD also sells plastic press-fit caps. Hammer the hex head into the cap and you have a good thumb-screw.

FWIW, Peter, I went to the one in San Carlos.

Good luck,
Evan

PS If you only find longer bolts, a Dremel tool w. grinder or cutoff wheel works to shorten them (use a vise and goggles:))

Or get a drinks bottle top (one with a wide neck works great) drill a wee hole in it, chuck in the bolt, and fill with epoxy, make a fistful at the same time.

I've heard about the press fit caps but have never seen them, sounds like they would do the job as well.:)
