AndyMan 7 #1 December 7, 2004 I'm starting to think about writing a website during the offseason to feature my photography... I even went so far to purchase the domain: www.andycam.org. Now comes the hard part... Before I start writing from scratch I wonder if there's any off-the-shelf products I should consider. I'm particularly interested in the rash of "photo-blogs" out there. I already use shutterfly for printing and delivery, so I'm not looking to replicate that... I really just want to display my photos and hawk my "services". If people want to buy my pics then they could click through to shutterfly. I'm looking for something with automated tools for creating galleries, indexing. Maybe do something with RSS feeds. Anyone have any recomendations? _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
vdschoor 0 #2 December 7, 2004 I really like the Gallery software clicky but it will not run with every hosting provider, I think they require a linux / bsd kind of server with apache and php installed. Although it does work for some windows based machines too I heard. Check out www.petergallistudios.com he uses Gallery. The cool thing about it is that it is highly configurable and you can change the layout to match your website fairly easy. Iwan

Fast 0 #4 December 7, 2004 I have used gallery for a long time for my website. It works awesome. The latest versions have VERY nice improvements. It used to be harder to upload pictures to it, but they have simplified most of the processes. Depending on the software available on your hosting provider there is a lot you can do with it. It will read the data embeded in the Jpeg, does resizes, etc. Highly Recommended~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. AndyMan 7 #5 December 8, 2004 Gallery does look really cool... I've been unable to figure out to what degree I can use it with Shutterfly for printing and fullfillment. Does anyone do this, or do you just use it for "display only"? Shutterfly has been surpriginsly short with their answers to technical questions... Anyone got a good contact "higher up" than the standard progalleryhelp@shutterfly.com ? _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
Billy 0 #6 December 10, 2004 AM, I used Frontpage to do mine and it was pretty easy,, Dreamweaver is another I've heard good things about... I didn't have to learn HTML and you just design the site the way you like it, then upload the files... takes a little reading (Frontpage for Dummies ) but the options are endless... I needed to be sure the server accpepts the Frontpage extensions. Man I really need to update that sucker, it's months now since I changed anything,, you can easily add a link to your shutterfly account site also Billy http://naturalbornflyerz.com Natural Born FlyerZ.com
AndyMan 7 #7 December 10, 2004 To quote from Shakespeare, "there's the rub". Yah, it's pretty easy to write your own webpage, but updating it is a pain in the ass. A good piece of software can really help manage things. Uploading images shouldn't be any more dificult or time consuming than... uploading photos. I'm still not finding exactly what I'm looking for, mostly on the fullfillment side. The open source package Gallery mentioned above looks really cool, but if there isn't an easy way to get my stuff printed then there's no point, I'll just stick with Shutterfly. I'm amazed that there isn't a service available for printing and fullfillment where I host the images, and just use an HTML form submission or Web-services transaction to get an order processed. Shutterfly does offer a service like this called C4P (click for print), but there's an $800 setup charge, which just makes it impractical. _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. PhreeZone 20 #8 December 10, 2004 Look at http://www.velocityphoto.com/ Lonny went the easy way and windowed his Printroom.com account so that all the photos are uploaded there and the fulfillment is done there, but its still part of his site.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
