eddytheeagle 0 #1 April 22, 2003 Recently, I started jumping a Stiletto 150 (just relined). Packing it, I noticed that the lines were somewhat longer (couple of inches) than on my Sabre 170 (old line set). Of course, it's a different model, but someone told me that PD started to put longer lines on their canopies. If so, why did they do this? And did they do this on all models, or just the stiletto? Thanks,Don't underestimate your ability to screw up!
MrHixxx 0 #2 April 22, 2003 I have a friend who relined a Sabre last year. He thought his new lineset was longer than the old. However, who knows how much his old lineset had shrunk from slider friction, can be up to 8 inches on the outboard lines. -Hixxxdeath,as men call him, ends what they call men -but beauty is more now than dying’s when
Samurai136 0 #4 April 22, 2003 My understanding is that many manufacturers calculate line shrinkage into their trim design. Over the life of a lineset they will shrink into the designer's trim spec and they canopy's performance will improve. riggerrob 643 #5 April 22, 2003 I have about a dozen PD trim charts if you want to compare, or better yet, ask PD to fax you these charts. An earlier poster made a good point about the old line set having shrunk. Once the outer A lines have shrunk by 3 inches, I try talking jumpers into re-lining their canopies. relyon 0 #7 April 22, 2003 I've attached chart I got from Rusty Vesty that illustrates how to measure PD canopy line lengths. (I had to shrink it by 50% and save it at 85 percent JPG quality in order to upload it.) Bob
Samurai136 0 #8 April 22, 2003 Quote As far as I know only one manufacture does this. Atair Aerodynamics. Who else do you know of building canopies this way? Big Air Sportz. In conversation with Brian Germain he mentioned that he figures shrinkage into the production trim. After 50-100 jumps the lineset will be at the designed spec. PD builds the Samurai... I'm guessing PD would also factor some shrinkage into the production line length for their canopies. Ken"Buttons aren't toys." - Trillian Ken
eddytheeagle 0 #9 April 22, 2003 Thanks for all the imput. I contacted PD, and they assured me they didn't change the lenght of the lines they put on the canopies. So the differences in line lenght (of the same model/size) are due to shrinking, as suggested above. BTW, it's BigAirSportz who makes the Samurai, but that was probably a slip of the finger...Don't underestimate your ability to screw up!
PhreeZone 20 #10 April 23, 2003 Right... Big Air Sportz makes the Sam. They also have a hybrid trim package where the majority of the lines are Spectra and the outer lines are Vectran to conrtol the shrinkage factor even more.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
murrays 0 #11 April 23, 2003 I believe the Samurai _is_ built by PD...Big Air's design but they are using PD's production capabilities. I think a BASE canopy is also being built by PD for the designer as well. This page on the Big Air website explains how the relationship came about.-- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
Samurai136 0 #12 April 23, 2003 Right. The Samurai is a Big Air canopy built by PD. See the clicky link in the other post. The most recent redesign also got rid of the outboard Vectran lines (only the steering lines are Vectran). Since the spectra would be shrinking and the vectran would not, it would put the canopy out of the designed spec. My first Samurai has the vectran outboard lines and I haven't noticed any performance change, yet.Ken "Buttons aren't toys." - Trillian Ken
