j3zz 0 #1 February 21, 2005 I have just started to use camera wings, the suit I have is Cotton so a fairly slow fabric. I find I am spending a lot of time chasing down to the formations. If I am not careful I pop up really quickly. I know this takes time to master. I am of the opinion that I would rather be using the wings more and erring on the side of working a bit to stay above the formation. Ie falling faster in general. I am not sure this makes sense to anyone but you input would be appreciated. "Now I know why the birds fly" Hinton Skydivers
IvanPeters 0 #2 February 21, 2005 Yes. But then I wear weight with everything. I have found that I can film 4 way with little or no weight but then the wings spend the whole jump not being used. Seems a bit of a waste. More seriously, I like to keep my weight the same for any type of jump I do (even solo's) just to keep canopy performance consistent (20lbs makes quite a difference). Do you normally have to wear weight when jumping with others? Ivan
ltdiver 3 #3 February 21, 2005 Weights and wings on all my cameraflying jumps. Wings are important on exits and riding the burble with RW. Weights are important to keep me there. I like to have a little more weight than needed so I can use my full wing and ride as close to my 4-way team as necessary to fill the video frame. I use a Sony .6, which equates to a .45 in most any other lens. Zoomed all the way out (long exits need this when you lead a formation out the door). ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon
j3zz 0 #4 February 21, 2005 I am flying a kenko 0.43 and am quickly finding the need to be just about touching the subject to get a really good shot. It makes it a challenge and I am just doing it for fun at the moment. Did my best RW camera exit this weekend videoing a 2-way.was so close did not have there whole bodies in frame but had the grip and did not touch them, It felt sweet. Obviously for 4-wau I would need to be a little further away. "Now I know why the birds fly" Hinton Skydivers
Cacophony 0 #5 February 22, 2005 I don't need weights for anything. There are only a few special tandem situations that I have found I need more speed for. In those circumstances I just dont wear my wings. If the tandem is just that fast, you probably can get a steep enough angle without your wings. If you just can't get around having wings, then you will probably need weights in that situation. For RW video I don't use weights at all. My wings simply keep me from falling into the formation. When shooting straight down, as in shooting 4 way, I can keep my speed high enough to match theirs by collapsing my wings.
diablopilot 2 #6 February 22, 2005 My theory is a fast suit with big wings. Wings will slow you down, that's what they are there for. I've had FliteSuit camera suits with a slick ZP fronts, and large wings from the get go. There is nothing I have been unable to stay with with that combination (Talking about belly fly and tandems of course.)---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. I've had FliteSuit camera suits with a slick ZP fronts, and large wings from the get go. There is nothing I have been unable to stay with with that combination (Talking about belly fly and tandems of course.) And I have a slow 3 piece freefly suit with a camera top... I'm a lot of surface area without a lot of weight, so I don't have the range JP has in his slick suit. So I do wear weights with wings mostly to belly-film tandems. I also don't arch that great, so I like weights. With some super heavy tandems, I'll go without wings and with weights. But I like to have the wings there because I can get steeper underneath with the wings vs. without. And besides, it's more fun to land my canopy with more weight on. In other words, be aware of your higher wingloading when adding weights. peace lewhttp://www.exitshot.com
j3zz 0 #9 February 22, 2005 How much weight are you carrying? _ also what fabric is your suit and what build are you. Sounds like you weight similair to me. Lew you too how much? I am about 5'11 and about 185 out the door. I am thinking of getting a 10lb belt and starting with 5 and seeing how it goes. ltdiver 3 #10 February 22, 2005 QuoteHow much weight are you carrying? _ also what fabric is your suit and what build are you. Sounds like you weight similair to me. I wear 13# of lead. My jumpsuits are nylon zp. I started with 10# but the faster teams topped about 125 mph so I had to upgrade or fly with my wings tucked in the whole way. Yeah, we're similar build. I'm 5' 10" and 185 out the door with weights and gear. ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon

lewmonst 0 #12 February 22, 2005 I'm 5'13" and 190 out the door without a weight belt. My weight belt can hold up to 18 lbs, and sometimes I wear all 18. So with it all on, I can be 208 out the door... Good Times!!! For my 4-way team right now, I don't wear any weight. I fly my wings on exit and rarely use them for the rest of the skydive unless I'm burble hopping. My 4-way team doesn't have a fast fall-rate though, and I have worn 6 or 8 lbs filming other 4way teams. peace lewhttp://www.exitshot.com

diablopilot 2 #15 February 23, 2005 Yeah, that's a Taffeta Nylon....some what permiable, it's a good choice for a fast jumpsuit. Bev makes some nice suits. FliteSuit uses it as well but also offers SoarCoat (the same as canopies are made of) for a slightly faster fall rate.---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are.
