Safire1 With Mod Opening problems

Hey all you safire1 owners. I got he Performance mod done this last winter. Great landings Much improved. I am having a problem that when my canopy opens i endup at least 180 degress off heading. I had the mod done by local Master rigger Per icarus' Specs. The first weekend out i just thought is was body position on opening. but after doing 6 jumps this weekend it did it every jump. I had a more experieced jumper check it out and it did the same thing for him. I pro pack it and have tried changing various things while packing rolling hte nose, tucking the nose.....leaving more and less line in the bottom of the pack. and i am still having problems. I have had other packers give it a shot to no avail. Safire1 119 witha A Javelin container.
Any ideas or sugesstions woudl be greats

I have a new Safire 2 which I assumme is nearly identical to a "1" with the mod.
I am convinced it is the packing. I am lazy and the canopy is brand new, so I have been paying packers to pack it, but I also packed a few times myself. I experience about 60% of the time a right hand dive when I open. First I thought like you it was my body position, but now I am convinced it is the packing (e.g. when I packed myself it was on heading same when packed by another guy, when 2 other packers packed it I had the off-heading). The main has been packed mostly "Pro". I am still trying to figure out what in the packing can lead to this. So you might want to try a couple of different ways of packing, including Pro (I pack slowly keeping lines very straight and clean and put effort in flaking etc. -this gave best results so far).

few thoughts: does it fly strait with the steering line stowed or released ?
what's your wingloading ? (mine at 1.35:1 is quite sensitive to harness input / square body on opening)
maybe ask some to jump your canopy and eventualy experience turn ?

I had the safire recommended as a soft-opening canopy. Mine certainly satisfies that requirement -- in fact, the statement that the mod makes the openings take longer is part of what makes me not want to get it. I'd just get scared.

Ok the story of how the mod came about, it was actually made for a BASE canopy that had some issues with it's flare, or more like lack of flare. Well a lot of people claimed the same thing on thier Safire, so since it worked so well on a BASE canopy Derek tried it on his own safire, his roommates and several other friends of his (he test jumped them all 1st), the results were great and everyone loved it, the softer openings for a lot of them were a greatly appreciated bonus.

These were all safires made in the US, so if you have one from NZ you probably don't have the flare issues or opening issues, kind of like affected crossfires. If you don't have an problem with getting plenty of flare out of your canopy I don't see any reason for getting the mod, which is really to fix the flare problem. (I'm thinking of trying it on my sabre for the openings)

I also have a Safire 1 (NZ made) but with the HooknSwoop (not Icarus) mod which greatly improved landings and made openings even softer. I often get a turn/dive to the left after opening. However, I think I got this before the mod as well. I am psycho packing. I was having problems with line twists but seemed to have solved that by stowing less line on the bag, and free-stowing more in the container.

yeah, i need the mod on mine, i've been talking about it for months. i just need to send it you you guys. when i think about it, i'm going to jump, when i have time to send it off, i'm not thinking about it. i'll try to ship it out to you soon.

keep hoping i can just buy a new main like i want, but that's not happening anytime soon...:S

I have a safire with the mod. I had it done by the Icarus service facility when I had it relined. I think it gave it a lot better flare, but it still doesn't have as much flare as the sabre2 I demoed. Anyway, come to think of it, it did open pretty strange for a while (off heading, surging etc...) but now it has settled down I guess. I get a nice on heading slow opening every time now. My only complaint could be that it opens too slow. There is only probably six inces from the toggles to the brake set loop, which is probably why it opens so slow. Takes about 1000 ft on average to open (thats with the nose hanging and the slider pushed back). I love the openings but I wish it would turn better with my legs and have alittle more bottom end flare.

The amunt of steering line between the brake loop and the toggle shouldn't affect the opening, as long as you set the brakes when you pack:P.

Thanks Guys for all the Input. I am going to work with the Rigger and the guys at the dz with different packing i have never psycho packed it so i am going to see if we can't get it worked out. If all else fails i'll send it off and have it done.
Just to make a comment on anyone wondering my chute takes about 6-800 feet to open and it's really nice and soft. And as i said before the Landings are so much better.......my Canopy actually Flares with out pushing my lines all the way past my waist and nearly hyper extending my arms.

how does the mod affect front riser flying and recovery arc? Mine was unstable on double front before I lengthen the lower steering line (that's actualy why I did it) => the flare is a little bit deeper but still there, while it's way nicer and safer to dive.
I'm curious about the mod cause I might consider it if I sell the canopy to a low timer or some one wanting easier flare and not flying with fronts. (thinking of a few female friends of mine here ;-) )

Relining it with the 2 specs, would do the trick as well, right ?

The mod doesn't affect the front risers pressure or recovery arch at all. It is done to the upper controle lines only, no other lines are touched, so the canopy reacts exactly the same during front riser turns. Well as long as your steering lines are long enough to not deflect the tail when you pull down on your fronts.

Relining with the complete safire2 line trim will give you a shorter recovery arch and I think a bit higher front risers pressure since they change the trim on all the lines not just the steering lines. I have heard several complaints from people use to the safire1 recovery arch who sent their safire in for a reline and it came back with a 2 lineset. :S I have also heard from people who wanted the 2 lineset and were much happier with it rather than the 1. So I guess choose your poison.

My safire was beating the snot out of me on openings consistently. the only time i had soft openings was when I did sub terminal hop n pops. I have an american made safire 1. after the mod, my openings are relatively on heading, and now super soft. and the flare...well it made an already good flare(I never had a problem landing the original line set) into a mongo power band....lots of bottom end. but I tend to not use all the flare available...I'm sure i can lengthen my surfs by quite a bit now with it. I'd recomdend it to anyone. for 95 bucks i got my reserve repacked and the mod done, all in one shot. can't go wrong with that. and Derick takes a look at all the little things that I should have done a long time ago on my rig. great rigger in my opinion. not that I want to test out his pack job:P:P:P

Ok, I'm bringing this old thread back to life as my safire has a mind of it's own... I have a Safire 1 size 139 about 2 years old... I had always had good openings and the flare sucked when landing straight in, but most of the time I could front riser carve in without any problems... To make a long story short, it's gone wacky out of trim now and isn't jumpable. I'll let you know more details and how it turns out after a reline. But a heads up, if your break lines are a few inches too short, get them fixed right away to avoid worse problems in the future.

btw, Derek has been very helpful with my safire issues...
