Converting home movies to DVD

Recommended Posts

Someone out there in dropzone.com land has been able answer most of my questions in the past:)
I'm looking at getting some home movies (maybe 1/2 hour to begin with) converted to a DVD format that we can send to various siblings around the world. My brother's looked into it and said that the local price where he is (Chicago) is about $120 on the low end for 4 copies. Does this sound reasonable, or are we asking the wrong questions?

Oops -- yes I did forget the important part.
8mm reel-to-reel (at least I think it's 8mm -- whatever home movies in the early 1960's were made in). Very high-tech.

thanks
Wendy W.
There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

What format are they in now?

VHS?

Assuming you don't need to edit it, if they are on tape, a cheap DVD recorder will do the trick for about that and you get to keep the recorder...

If edits are required, just ask one of the video guys at your DZ.

Me, I would capture/edit/ x-fer to DVD a vid for a lot cheaper than that IF they were a skydiver.

For someone else, 120 isn't too far off.
illegible usually

Wendy,
I used the below website about a year and a half ago converting all our old home movies to DVD for an Xmas present for my dad and they did a good job. I can't remember how much it cost but I think it was more expensive than $120. Anyway, take a look if ya like... :)

I think when Jesus said "love your enemy" he probably meant don't kill them.

This website offer prices by the foot of film, which they estimate based on reel size.

This company prices the same way, but appears to be significantly more expensive.

Here is another company that seems to be reasonably priced.

I don't know how many feet of film you have, so I can't tell if the prices are better or not. You should only need a single copy, which you should be able to copy yourself, or with the assistance of a friend with a DVD recorder/burner.

BTW, I used "transfer video from film to dvd" (without quotes) in Google. You might be able to find much better deals just by playing with the search terms, or trying froogle. Hope this helps.
