Adobe Premiere Pro to WMV - Best Practices?

Recommended Posts

I'm working on a lot of footage from DV sources and no matter what setting I try, there's always some type of lines in the video, or title screens look "mushy". I'm trying to get good clean exports for download (size isn't an issue for .wmv's).

Any tips on how to get the best result for "wmv" exports from Premiere pro?

BTW - If I export to tape, I can use Windows Movie Maker and get a clean vid>:(. It's a lot of extra work.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

A lot of people forget to deinterlace footage, which can result in small lines/jagged edges of objects.
You can either deinterlace uppon exporting, or you can deinterlace your video on the timeline itself (clip>field options>always deinterlace)

I always use the adobe media exporter for .wmv export within premiere/after effects, and get great results...

I've experienced what you're speaking of and found the best result, is to export the movie as an avi and then load it into the windows media encoder. It's a free program and can be downloaded off the microsoft website. I have yet to be able to get a good render directly from premiere.

The other nice thing is, the wmv encoder allows you to pick your settings. I prefer to use the streaming option with dvd quality picture and cd quality sound.

Cleaner XL actually uses the microsoft encoder.

Jarno, de-interlacing everything doesn't explain why sometimes premiere works fine and sometimes I get the blocky edges thing. The only time I de-interlace anything is when I'm converting between NTSC and PAL or if I import stills.

I therefore thought it to be something of a memory problem or something?

That could very well be.
I'm on a machine that has more RAM then I have brains (insert easy one liner here:P), so that might explain why it works fine here? Cause I never really tinker with the settings too much, and everything comes out looking clean here...

I have noted earlyer that premiere (earlyer versions) would tend to fukup compressionwise, if you have low memory and didn't render your effects before exporting. So this might be the cause....?
