hydrant 0 #1 August 29, 2005 I have a Canon Rebel XT and I got a Peleng 8mm fish eye lens. I am planing to use it while skydiving. Since I will have a camera mounted on my helmet or my leg I will have to set all the exposure setting while on the ground since the lens is manual and will not be able to change any settings while in the air. Therefore I am looking for a advices how to set up correct exposure settings before a jump, what I have in mind now is to take a few pictures on the ground and set it up according to that. Does anybody here have some kind of experience or advice for me, like what is the best aperature to use so everything is sharp and so on, thank you!!! ltdiver 3 #2 August 29, 2005 Quotewhat I have in mind now is to take a few pictures on the ground and set it up according to that. You've alreay stated the best approach. I'd suggest at least f/8.0 to keep the shutter speed high enough, yet let the depth of field be long enough to keep things in focus. Set the focus to just shy of infinity. I have a manual Russian 20mm lens that I like alot, however I don't use it much since my pictures need to be 100% no matter if I'm facing away from the sun or not (can't predict students, ya know). I need a lens that will adjust. I only use the complete manual lens when I don't -have- to catch -that- shot. ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon
ffejdraga 0 #3 August 29, 2005 One thing that is nice about a super wide lens like that is that focus is *almost* a non issue because the depth of field is so large since it is so wide. I have the same lens, and I have some nice pics with it. At first i was getting overexposed shots (remember that the sun will be in almost every pic...lots of light let in) but once I got that figured out, it was sweet. Just experiment and come up with a formula over time. Like Lori said, f8 will be a good place to start. The Fstop will not change the depth of field too much, but i have found that it just controls the exposure level of the pic...meaning that pics of different f stops will all have the same stuff in focus, it is just a matter of how light or dark the pic is. see attached pic. have fun, experiment. jeff D-16906
hydrant 0 #4 August 29, 2005 Thank you all for advices, and that is a nice picture, cant wait to try it this weekend :)) And what shutter speed do you use with f8?
bmcd308 0 #5 August 29, 2005 Let the camera pick the shutter speed. ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com
ffejdraga 0 #6 August 30, 2005 yeah, you can let the camera pick it, or go completely manual...i think on that shot it was f8 (i think...) and about 400 with 50 speed slide film. maybe i am wrong. I can't remember. Look into this guys site: lots of generic photo info: http://www.kenrockwell.com lots of good info check out the how tos and stuff. enjoy it all, it is all about the process of learning. jeff D-16906
hydrant 0 #7 August 30, 2005 One more question regarding the picture here you submitted. Did you have any freefall on that jump? And how did you secure your camera and where? Thanks I really like the pic :-))

ffejdraga 0 #9 August 30, 2005 Nope, no freefall. I just did a hop and pop (i think out of the cessna...although that doesnt matter..). The camera was around my neck by means of string that i tied to the camera. As I jumped I sjust held the camera to my chest with my left hand and threw out with my right. Then, once I was open, i wrapped the string around my hand and held the camera up as high as i could. Thanks for the compliments, it is one of my favorite pics too. jeff D-16906

I would've expected more of a fisheye, as shown in ffejdraga's avatar pic?Costyn van Dongen - http://www.flylikebrick.com/ - World Wide Wingsuit News
