2K Composites FFX???

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I searched the forum and only found info on the FF2. What about the FFX?

If you don't know what I'm talking about, look here http://www.2kcomposites.com/html/ffx.html

Do you jump one?
Would you recommend it?
Is it comfortable?
Do you need to adjust the camera? How do you do that?
Do you have a cameye or cameye2?
I couldn't tell from the photos... does it have openning(s) on the back to turn the camera on/off? And to start/stop recording?

Any other comments would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Chivo

as far as comfort, camera adjustment, cameye setup, what applies to the FF2 is true for the FFX.
Both have an opening on the back to access the on/off/start/stop jogle (PC style camcorders)
Good point of the FFX vs FF2: it's a bit narower and 100% snag proof (ok, 99,99999% ;-) )

I did not vote yet 'coz mine is on the way and I've never flown with a 2k product helmet , but I've seen a couple of them at my DZ and they are GOOD !

FFXs seem to be multiplying like rabbits at Langar, I know at least half a dozen people who jump them, including myself.

Do you jump one?

Yes, with a PC9. I've put about 200 jumps on it.

Would you recommend it?

Yes. It's not perfect but the design is great and he's still the only manufacturer making helmets like it.

Is it comfortable?

It's fine, quite tight compared to my old Gath but I think you want that to stop it moving around.

I had to adjust it to point the camera further down. It wasn't a massive problem but I had to make a concious effort to tilt my head down a bit if I wanted something in the middle of the picture.
When inside the helmet (mine is the one where you load the camera from the inside) the camera sits on a little shelf which is held in place by 2 bolts that go through the shelf and the helmet. I took out the bolts and the shelf, drilled 2 new holes in the shelf, put the shelf back in and the bolts back in through the new holes. Now it's just about perfect.

I also know that I'm not the only person that's had to do this mod. Could it be a freefly vs flat thing where if you're filming from flat you want the camera to be looking up a little bit?

Do you have a cameye or cameye2?

Yes. I've got the button attached to the outside of the helmet below the lense of the camera and the led sticking out just enough to see it in the corner of my left eye.

It does and lots of people use it like that without a CamEye.

I found that I couldn't hear my audibles very well because there was a big enough gap (1-2cm) between them and my ears to make the wind louder than them. Also, although the lining of the helmet is thinner over the audibles than the rest of it it's still thick enough to dim the audibles slightly.
So I folded back the lining and tucked it under itself so there was nothing in the way, then put some padding between the helmet and the audibles to bring them flush against my ear. No problems now.

They are pretty expensive (now £100 more than when I bought mine!) but they're also pretty unique and for the reduced snagability and general quality I think they're worth it.

I jump an FFX with a PC9, mostly for freefly. It's great. If anything, the sighting is slightly low - i.e. I have to tilt my head upwards slightly to get subjects centre-frame, but this is not so bad that I've adjusted anything. The main awkwardness is that you need to completely remove the camera to rewind, view footage, etc. That means pulling back the lining, and my lining is now starting to get noticeably worn after about 150 jumps.

The main pluses are the very low chance of snagging, and the simplicity - you can take a new one out of the box and jump straight on the plane, with no adjustments or setting up needed.

If you've got a tv and a remote for the PC9 handy you can access the AV port with the camera still inside the helmet and use it like that. Saves on having to take it out all the time, also saves battery by not using the little screen.

They look well built - i don't own one.
If you plan on top mounting a stills make sure you put some extra padding between the bolt and your skull!
I would personally replace the washers on the inside with much larger ones.
Apart from that they seem fine.

Gus - the cameras on my regular camera helmet are up at 15 degrees (ish), this seems a better general arrangement for FS, tandems, etc. Freefly is probably better with them level - but you are a better freeflier than me so u tell me!

Could you use laser link with the camera still in there and not removing the padding? Also do you use a wide angle lense? Does it inhibit taking the camera in and out? Thanks for all the info here.
