AndyMan 7 #1 September 22, 2005 I'm having firewire issues with my new (beige box) desktop. My PC120 will not autodetect to XP Pro. I do not get any notifications when I plug in and turn on the camera. Nothing shows up in the Device Manager. I have an external firewire disk that works fine. I've tried plugging my camera straight into the ports on the computer and into the spare port on the back of the external disk. No love. I've tried two different firewire cables. No love. I tried my camera on someone elses computer, and it works fine. How do you troubleshoot firewire connectivity issues? _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. I think we have to assume the Firewire hardware isn't at fault since it detects the external Firewire drive. My -guess- is that you're missing some sort of driver that would allow you to connect a camera. 1) Blame Microsoft. They really are the root of all evil for not supplying this to begin with. 2) Blame your editing software for likewise not supplying it since they should know that Microsoft doesn't. 3) Blame whoever made the Firewire card for exactly the same reason. Then, go backward in the previous order and see if you can snag a driver from a web site. windinmyface 0 #3 September 22, 2005 Can you connect the camera by USB, and does the computer recognize it then? This might at least give some clues about wether a driver is present. How old is the PC120? Is it possible to upgrade the firmware? Just taking wild stabs here, but maybe old firmware will not work with XP and/or firewire? ----- I am Dyslexia of Borg, futility is resistant, your ass will be laminated. mattjw916 2 #4 September 23, 2005 Even if there is no driver installed you should still get the device notification balloon which prompts you to install the driver when you plug it in, in addition to the little beep/bong sound. When you have the cam plugged into the computer check in device manager to see if there are any "unknown devices" present.NSCR-2376, SCR-15080
PhreeZone 20 #5 September 23, 2005 XP Pro has the drivers for the 120, its got the ones for my 110 in it. Something you need to take a look at is the editing program you are using, Premiere loaded profiles for my camera that took some playing with to get constant communication over the cables. Have you tried doing a boot with out the extrenal drive on and plugging in then?Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
bob.dino 1 #6 September 23, 2005 QuoteHow do you troubleshoot firewire connectivity issues? I've never had to. I'm pretty sure your camera doesn't need a device-specific driver - the "Microsoft DV Camera and VCR" driver should work fine and dandy. Make sure the camera is off. Connect the firewire cable to both the camera and computer. Turn on the camera. The camera should appear in Device Manager*, under Imaging Devices as "Microsoft DV Camera and VCR". If it's there it's your software. Download WinDV and try using that. If it works fine, then it's definitely your software (you're not by any chance using Sony Vegas 6 are you? Buggiest piece of shit I've seen in a while). If that doesn't work, I'm afraid I'm stumped... * Start | Control Panel | System, then click on the Hardware tab, then on Device Manager. It never shows up in Device Manager, nor does it make the "da ding!" connect sound. My next guess is to buy another cable. Both my older cables aren't working. _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
Danger 0 #9 September 23, 2005 Since it is not auto detecting, connect everything turn the camera on, go to device manager and have the computer search for new hardware. Worked for me when my computer didn't detect my camera
SudsyFist 0 #10 September 23, 2005 My PC120 had a similar issue, where it linked to my laptop but not my desktop, then eventually crapped out even with my laptop. After going through multiple card and cable replacements, as well as OS reinstall, I took the camera to Sony (love being in San Diego), and they found an issue in their diagnostics and replaced a board inside the unit. Worked fine ever since. I had found a number references online to firewire issues with the PC120 hardware, so I wrote a letter describing such, convincing them to waive the post-warranty service charge. Don't know if you're experiencing the same issue, but I thought I'd share.
