jont 0 #1 October 18, 2005 Hi all Adobe Premiere Standard v7.1 came pre-installed on my Sony laptop, and I'm finally getting round to trying it out. I can capture footage just fine off my camera by firewire, but the Scene Detect function just doesn't seem to work - everthing stays together as one long clip. Anyone any ideas? ta Jon T

quade 4 #3 October 18, 2005 Is the footage raw and unedited footage or have you simply for testing purposes, slipped in a tape of material that had been already edited and laid back out to tape? It's possible (probable) that by doing so it wiped out the data code from the original footage which would give nothing for most scene detection software to detect. To test this, just look at the data code display when playing back the tape in a camera. Not the timecode . . . the data code . . . which contains the time of day and camera settings.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
docjohn 0 #4 October 19, 2005 What Quade said is right on. Also make sure you're using DEVICE CONTROL when capturing video. If you use NO DEVICE CONTROL, then SCENE DETECT is not available. . . . Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video
jont 0 #5 October 19, 2005 Thanks for the suggestions guys, much appreciated. I have now sorted it, by pure trial and much error, and with no thanks at all to the confusing "help" files. The problem was I was simply clicking the red "record" button to capture, which made sense to me. In fact to summon up Scene Detect you have to click the Tape button, or the In/Out button, which if you look really carefully is enclosed in the same outline box as the Scene Detect tick box. For the record, it's also a lot slower to capture than some other systems. Instead of capturing the whole lot but dividing it into files on the fly, it stops recording each time it comes to a time-code jump, then pre-rolls, and starts recording again until the next one. But it works, so hey. thanks again for your inputs jon t
dragon2 2 #6 October 19, 2005 ?? I just use the red record button, and it records the various files on the fly. You told premiere to pre-roll etc yourself, by using the in-out function. ciel bleu, Saskia

You told premiere to pre-roll etc yourself, by using the in-out function. not true for me. the red button simply captures everything as one scene, until you hit stop. I could only make scene detect work by using the "Tape" button, which does the same thing, but enables scene capture. I did not use the In/Out button, but assume that it will trigger scene capture too. This is because when I looked at the user interface, I saw In/Out and Tape are grouped in a box with the scene capture control, but the red button isn't, which is what gave me the clue to try it. If it makes any difference, I'm using Premeier Standard 7.1 not Premiere Pro. Jon T
dragon2 2 #8 October 19, 2005 Premiere 7 = Premiere Pro. ciel bleu, Saskia
dragon2 2 #10 October 19, 2005 It's still Premiere Pro 1.0 See this thread if you don't believe me: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1685519;search_string=premiere%20pro%207;#1685519 ciel bleu, Saskia

So, I don't have Pro, and I don't have Elements. I have a weird thing called Standard, that clearly isn't very, but which periodically nags me to upgrade to Pro. It claims to be v7.0.1, but it turns out to be v1.0 (cos it came after v6.5) And the controls don't work like anyone else's. Curiouser and Curioser Thanks for the info, anyway ciao for niao Jon T
docjohn 0 #12 October 20, 2005 It sounds like there really might be a difference between Premiere 7.1 and Premiere Pro (just a guess). I say this because when using PPro 1.5, you CAN click the red record button and use SCENE DETECT. Plus it works without starting and stopping the camera at each new scene. Can't think of any other reason that scene detect doesn't work for you. . . . . Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video
goobersnuftda 0 #13 October 20, 2005 I can help you with this problem because I had the EXACT same thing happen to me. Sony DCR-PC line of mini DV camera. First understand that the progression of Adobe Premiere is v6.5 then Pro v1.0 (internally Adobe called it v7.0), then finally Pro v1.5. You have Pro v1.0 with a patch and that is why they called it v7.1. If you have the newest Pro v1.5 and installed the DV upgrade patch it is now Pro v.1.51 Anyways, take that version you now have Pro 1.0 (v7.0) and toss that most vile piece of crap as far away from you as you can. Serisouly. Adobe put that crap out and about one month later, scrpped it and put out v1.5 IN the mean time, people got majorly pissed that the v1.0 was flakey, didn't record properly from the camera, destroyed data and spontaninously blew up. Kinda funny how 30 days after a new release, it is already oudated by a better version. I wonder why the did that? Anyways, they learned a great trick from microsoft. Put out a piece of crap and when it if discovered that it is full of bugs, charge peole to upgrade. Remember 95, 98, 98a, 98b, 98SE etc. That is what Adobe did. Not cool at all. The best thing is that if you have the power to run Adobe PremierePro v1.5, it is the most wonderfull thing on the planet. Steep learning curve if starting from scratch but once you know how to drive this puppy, you can not max what this thing can do in the many years and years you have in video editing. Get Pro v1.5 there is no other video editng software out there that has as many 3rd party plug ins, add ons or video editing help in books and DVD training.
