stratostar 5 #26 March 18, 2006 Quoteam I just paying more cuz their 'skydiving specific'? yes and the glass may be better, but I have not look into them only because I'm not in the market. QuoteAre the royal and waycool really that much better? thats what they say. You may want to look into promaster brand as well I have had a .5 promaster for the last 11 yrs. it ran about 80$ back then, and I have had good luck with it. As for the poster who said the weight of the sony broke off the front of his trv11, this is not uncommon with with trv's all of the front is weak and I have had to rebuild many over the years and they worked fine after words. Most of the time it is due to over tighting the lens or just abuse like dropping or bumping the camera not the weight. When I say abuse, you wouldn't even know you did it till the mount falls off, if you take the lens off a lot that hurts, most people over tighten and don't know it. You have to ask your self, how much do you want to spend? Are you trying to be Norm Kent or something or are you just flying video for your own fun jumps or are you doing paid videos. Also how much money are you willing to throw away when you lose a helmit or have a camera knocked off your head. I lost a 10d on opening last season that was 1300.00 bucks thrown out plus a 500.00 dollar lens so in total 1800 bucks thrown out in the trash. So again how much money are you willing to throw away? Get what you can afford and are willing to lose. ~you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo
Carpediem 0 #27 March 18, 2006 QuoteSo what is a cheaper website to buy the sony lense off of? What's the price? ebay QuoteAre the royal and waycool really that much better? i'm sure they are/can be better (I have not used these either of these however). It's really camera specific. I have a buddy who uses a noname .45x lens and he swears by it, but it doesn't look good at all on mine Your best bet is to take it into the store and try out different lenses. Then go on ebay and buy the one that worked the best QuoteThe Sony lens I had was quite a bit heavier than the kenko I use now. Which model? I use the VCL0630X. There are alum models also which are heaver. I'd agree with Zoter too on the fact that the sony lens is a little larger and would be an easy target for a riser slap. I give it the most abuse hitting it on the door tho. Those who do, can't explain. Those who don't, can't understand.
ltdiver 3 #28 March 18, 2006 QuoteI won't get another Sony lens. I had one before and it was so heavy that the front end of my trv11 fell apart after 1 season with it. The Sony lens I had was quite a bit heavier than the kenko I use now. Depends on what lens you bought. Sony makes more than one model of 0.6 lenses. The first one that came to my house I sent back without even using it...it was way to big and heavy. The second one was just right...and the one most of us Sony lens flyers use. ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon
ltdiver 3 #29 March 18, 2006 QuoteVCL0630X. Guess that is the newer Sony lens. As a follow-up to my previous post (about weight). This is the lens I got (and is still available elsewhere). Sony VCL-0630S. ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon
Canuck 0 #30 March 18, 2006 QuoteOr am I just paying more cuz their 'skydiving specific'? Yup. Just like helmets. And they are a very tidy package, and depending on the rest of your set-up can highly reduce the chance of a snag, and that's worth something... The weight thing is BS though The Sony lens that most of us use (the cheap one) is smaller and lighter than pretty much any lens out there other than the single element varieties.
