I ordered a 20D today

Recommended Posts

I have been waiting to get a DSLR forever. I wanted a 10D. But they were brand new, and the price was sure to come down after other people bought them. Then, it was almost time for the Canon rebates. But by rebate time, everyone was talking about the 20D. Then the 20D came out, but its price was sure to fall after it had been out a while. Then the rebates came, and I thought about it, but there was a 5D coming out. The 5d Was way out of price range, so then I decided to get a 20D. Then I started hearing rumors about a 30D. Then the 30D got announced. It is clear that 20D prices will fall quickly once 30Ds are available in the US. However, I have been waiting forever, and if you wait for the prices of consumer electronics to bottom out, you will be aiting forever. So I bought a 20D. Even though I would have rather had a 30D. And even though the prices are about to fall.

I am happy with my new 350D (XT) because of how small and light it is, but I am also happy that prices are falling on everything and maybe in a couple years I'll upgrade to something bigger, heavier, and cheaper. I got it for around $800 and within a week it was available for more than $50 less... prices are indeed dropping.

My biggest regret is that I have been without the damn thing for the whole time. I am becoming my father, who is still waiting for the prices of PCs to bottom out before he buys one.

I know exactly what you mean. Whenever i am in the market for a new piece of electronics, i just pick a date that i want it by, and accept the fact that it will be cheaper the next day.:D

Never look down on someone, unless they are going down on you.

ya man. i just always buy 1 year (and sometimes 2) year old tech on everything. It's still really good, and if you REALLY needed that extra quality for what you were doing, then you wouldn't question picking it up.

Buy it and enjoy. Looking forward to seeing your work

I do the opposite. I try and buy top end because you get to hang onto it longer. I got the 10D when it first came out, and it's still OK.

I'm waiting on the Rebel version of the 5D. Right now I think the Rebel XT is the best camera for the money for general skydiving.

Never mind. I did exactly the same thing :)
Anyway, besides spot metering the 30D won't do much more than the 20D (and there seem to be some software hack to allow this on the 20D).

As an FYI, I ordered it with a Dell 20% off online deal and took the free shipping. I ordered it on the 20th, and the DHL website shows its expected delivery date as tomorrow (the 22nd).

I have heard from others that Dell will screw you if you use their promotions with really slow ship times, but I did not have that experience.

Hey JP - what does that mean? What will the Rebel Version do that the current one doesn't? Cheers mate.

Hey, Stumps. There is no Rebel version of the 5D yet. When the 20D came out, shortly afterwards the Rebel 350xt (I may be getting them model wrong, the current rebel) showed up, and it performs in-between the 10D and the 20D and is WAY lighter. I'm waiting on a plastic-bodied slightly detuned full-frame Rebel version of the 5D. It's not out yet, but I'm pretty sure it's coming.

Hmmmmmm OK i see what you are getting at, but i didn't think the 350 was a detuned 20, more a tuned up 300 - i.e. a different model line.
So essentially what you are hoping for is something in between the 30 and the 5? Interesting.....

What i want is a full frame CMOS, 5 fps minimum with 50 shot buffer all for 500 quid. Think i am being unreasonable?! :D
Actually, if the price of the 20 came down a ton or so that would be nice.....
