Camera's & RSL's

Recommended Posts

Ok so I've just started doing vid and during my initial safety brief for camera, one thing that was highlighted was RSL's.

Now I've never been a big fan of RSL's (bring on all you zelots who think i'm wrong etc, its a personal choice get over it!) as such didn't hace one when started jumping camera.

Anyway I just read a post about cutaway showing photos (swooping forum with katana) and the guy had an RSL and is now going for a skyhook!
Now i personally dont want either device to fire my reserve up into a possible snagged canopy but hey i've only got 260 jumps !!

so whats other peoples views??

RSLs were frowned upon for cameramen back int he days when camera helmets had dozens of snag points (i.e. Robin Sutherland's)/
Nowadays with factory-made camera helmets being almost RSL-friendly, there is less of a risk of entanglement. Ergo, Pitt Meadows' best freefall photographer just bought a shiny new Vector 3 Micron with a Skyhook.

It took me awhile to come to decide how I would handle this, especially since I had stopped jumping RSL around jump 120ish, but I decided and currently jump my camera (in a FF2) with a Skyhook..

FGF #???
I miss the sky...

You probably wouldn't. On the other hand it might only become snagged on your helmet once you have cut away. A released riser trapped under the camera bracket wouldn't be much fun. The standard camera-mount screws (the ones that look like tripod screws) could be a serious snag hazard on an open L-bracket, especially if they have some small washers underneath them.

That said, I'm currently disconnecting my skyhook for normal camera jumps but leaving it connected for wingsuit camera jumps. I've taken steps to remove the snag points on my camera and think it's relatively clean now. I decided, after talking to my rigger and some instructors that I respect, that the benefits outweighed the risks in the two jump types.
