Scoop 0 #1 April 23, 2006 Hi, I read piisfish's incident report and has made me more determined to get this idea off the ground. I've been thinking about it for a while I am a CNC milling engineer now and my boss & I are looking for a nice project for me to research, refine and manufacture. I've made the suggestion of a camera quick release mounting bracket for camera helmet as seems like simple product to make. If anyone has any advice or suggestions with their experience of flying camera and setting up helmets reply or PM me as I'd be very much interested in hearing what your thoughts are. I'd love to make a nice product for someone and hopefully make their life/job a bit safer too. Obviouslly thinking aluminium for the material due to its weight and will be certainly strong enough for the job. I shall start researching existing products for design ideas but if you have any criticisms of current designs or would like to see something in paticular let me know. Thanks EDIT: I've attached pics to clarify what I'm talking about.
pilotdave 0 #2 April 23, 2006 How about a ringsight quick release that leaves no snag hazard when the sight is removed? Dave

DJL 235 #4 April 24, 2006 I wouldn't be interested in buying a quick release for every snag point on my helmet. It's a matter of added cost and added complexity; I don't want to spend time during a malfunction trying to figure out which of the doo-hickeys to release. I chin release is preferable."I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
Miami 0 #5 April 24, 2006 QuoteI don't want to spend time during a malfunction trying to figure out which of the doo-hickeys to release. That's not what a quick release is for. Quick releases are intended for use in non emergency situations where you want to take your video/still off of your helmet and be able to replace it easily and quickly without having to line everything back up.Miami
spanky39154 0 #6 April 24, 2006 Yes to an extent i agree with you about just clear the whole lot but it would be nice to save one camera!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large Groups!!
supafly 0 #7 April 24, 2006 Yes! I have posted something about a ringsight quick release before. I would definitely use this. Some jumps I need a ringsight and others I don't. It would be great to get rid of it when not needed. Also, packing my helmet in a bag when traveling would be much easier if I could take the ringsight off...without my lazy ass having to take out three hard to reach screws. There are a bunch of ways you could do it, but the most straight forward would probably be to stick to a design that is similar to a camera quick release. The footprint would probably be smaller and the top plate would have a post to mount the sight. Scoop, if you end up making something like this, just tell me where to send the check and who to make it out to. --KeithArizona Drive 4-Way VFS - www.DriveVFS.com
Zeemax 0 #8 April 24, 2006 surely a bayonet style fixing, like a light blub, would work well for a ringsight quick release?Phoenix Fly - High performance wingsuits for skydiving and BASE Performance Designs - Simply brilliant canopies
vdschoor 0 #9 April 24, 2006 QuoteYes to an extent i agree with you about just clear the whole lot but it would be nice to save one camera! Please don't start jumping camera if saving a camera is more important than saving your life. I will chop my helmet immediately if something would be snagged on there.. I don't have time to "quick release" whatever it is snagged on..
Scoop 0 #10 April 24, 2006 Hmm, ringsite release. I like it. I most certainly could make something for this. In fact I could probably even pinch the material out of stock for free. I think bayonet fixing would be too complicated and over engineering something which could be very simple. Perhaps a male and female low profile adaptor would be easier. With female side attached to helmet to prevent snag points if jumping without camera. I think I'll go to DZ with a pencil, some plain paper and some measuring equipment and see what I can come up with. Heres one design, not quick release exactly, but single bolt design to allow safe removal of ringsite and use of helmet. I shall ponder a safe and practical quick release system for ringsite. The only problem is I dont want to start putting in pins with loops etc. I think that would just create more of a snag hazard. I'll also ponder the bracket at some point. Any suggestions/criticisms welcome. NOTE: Im an engineer not a draughtsman so excuse my shit drawing!

The same sliding baseplate with locking pin design. Will only need to be tiny. Something similar to example one as posted in first post, but obviouslly smaller. Also find attached examples of our work.
