docjohn 0 #1 May 18, 2006 I've been burning DVD's on my computer but am ready to move up to linear editing using a stand alone DVD burner (ie. connect camera to DVD burner and go). Any recommendations for best hardware to do this? Or any recommendations for features to look for in a burner? Thanks . ltdiver 3 #2 May 18, 2006 I use the Sony RDR-GX300. It works flawlessless and its picture clear. It's an older model but you can still get it. By all means do NOT get the Sony RDR-GX315. For some reason Sony snuffed up on this model and I haven't found -anyone- who hasn't had problems with it. From poor picture quality, unable to transfer via firewire without glitches, failure to burn, and non-transfer of sound. Sony is coming out with a 330, but I'm thinking since it's just another version of the 315 I'd avoid it as well. ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon
johnny1488 1 #3 May 18, 2006 Well I would suggest you move up to NON-linear editing I have a Lacie DL dvd burner that is awesome. It also has lightscribe which I have never used, but for DVDs it is great. But it is a firewire drive, and I dont know how that translates to PC users (if you are one). docjohn 0 #4 May 19, 2006 QuoteWell I would suggest you move up to NON-linear editing Isn't Adobe Premiere on a PC considered NLE? I've been doing that for years. I'm looking for something I can do on the fly so I can give tandem customers their DVD before they leave the DZ. . johnny1488 1 #5 May 19, 2006 Though I've never refered to it as "moving up", you are right, tandem is linear editing. And I would ask a videographer for a recomendation on a dvd burner cause the lacie I mentioned is not for use in tandem world. I think most of the guys at my DZ use a sony unit. lewmonst 0 #6 May 19, 2006 Yeah, do not get a Sony gx315. I used to be all sony sony sony, but not anymore. (Don't get cyberhome either for that matter) I've now got a Panasonic DMR-ES35V and it's fantastic. No problems so far with heavy use for the last 2 weeks. Does both VHS and DVD (all formats) and can dub from VHS to DVD and vice versa. (Found out this week at 50 jumps it will only do 49 titles per DVD). And, it fast, very fast. Only 1 second to start recording and maybe 4 seconds to burn a jump once you hit stop. Even when my sony was working, it was so slow compared to this panasonic. peace lewhttp://www.exitshot.com

docjohn 0 #10 May 20, 2006 Thanks for all the replies so far. I've found the Sony GX300 on eBay for a good price but I noticed that there's no firewire port. Guess that means analog input only (RCA jacks). Yes, I'll avoid the GX315. Lots of bad feedback on that unit. Does the Panasonic have a firewire port? Keep in mind my goal: quick burning tandem videos after the dive. Thanks . Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video
migliore 0 #11 May 20, 2006 I just got a Toshiba RD-XS34 which is a DVD recorder with a 160GB HDD. It's really nice to bring in multiple clips, create playlists and the do fast dubbing to DVD (a 5 min video burns to disc in less than one minute). Finalization takes the normal time.
