FTP came off on opening

Recommended Posts

Well, my FTP with stills and video decided it needed to leave my head at 3800 on Sat. LUCKLY I managed to catch it before it got past full arm extention and saved it. B|:o

I think we've narrowed it into a riser hit the release on the left side. What mods have people done to their helmets to keep this from happening to them? The only other FTP at the DZ has one of the original metal clasps. I know the new ones have the entire side area built up and a big cover over it with just a hole to reach in to hit the release, I've got an older FTP thats not built up there.

Any ideas on how to mod it? I don't think I can get that lucky a second time.

Of course its on video :P Its a great close up of my pants and then shaking as I put it back on my head.

Honestly the only thing that slowed it enough to catch it was the tongue switch was still in my mouth and it took ALL the slack out of the helmet as it fell away.

I want to prevent this from happening again if I can ;)

Post some pictures of yours too Chuck, if you can, or maybe I can find some on the Bonehead site. I'm not really familiar with either style, but I am curious to see both because I'm in the process (very early in the process) of building a CCM from Wes Rich's plans and have been trying to decide whether to use the latches he usually does or do something similar to a FTP with cutaway, or what.

I have one of the older helmets also and my buddy almost lost it for me 2 weeks ago .I take it you just got it used and not fitted for you? I have some liner shim kits for it .Just let me know if you want that kit ? I'm sure if it is shimmed correctly you won't be having this problem again.

Damn Erk! One of the guys at SSM has one like yours, he built a bracket to fit over the release and then put a hole in it that he can only get his finger in to release. He had the same thing happen to him and he caught it with his knees.:D

Never look down on someone, unless they are going down on you.

the clasp on the back helmut came open and he also had a funky opening... both of these things led him to think it was a riser slap...

but Phree could probably explain/describe it better then I could... since we only spoke about it after landing... and I wasn't actually on the jump.

After my first one came off I rigged up an RSL between the helmet and the bone - even if the latch breaks it'll still stay on my head. If I need the bitch to come off in a hurry, I'll have to pull the tab on the RSL. Keep in mind that I've practiced ripping this thing off my head in a hurry many, many, times. Just in case I ever get the urge to toss another $4500 in the swamp B|

Peace,
Z
