starting up video program at small DZ

Recommended Posts

I'm helping a Friend, who has been operating a very small DZ, start a video program. im sorry to say that he has no equipment for mixing and editing so we need to get some relatively inexpensive gear. My goal is to send his customers home with a quality product that they will be able to share. since the world is using DVD for the most part it would be nice to go with that format. I have read the arguments for linear editing and NLE and linear would be best. I have a laptop PC so i don't think it would be very handy. I have read a quite a few posts here and got a laundry list of equipment but it seems to be for operations that have already got off the ground.
ANY SUGGESTIONS? ( there goes pandora's box)

Our setup is very simple.

We use a 2 channel mixer with one input for "aux sound" and one for "Camcorder level". This is connected to a colour TV on one end and a DVD burner on the other. Our sound comes from either my laptop or our other camera dude's Ipod. We do most of our editing in camera, using the fades, digital effects, etc.

As i understand it, this equipment, the mixer, basic TV and DVD burner aren't all that expensive. In fact i think you can find all of it at most electronics stores.

we've got the very close to the same thing as PeeJ said.

For a while I was the primary videot at my dz. during the last 6 weeks I kinda had to step away so i wouldn't burn out.

do as much editing "in-camera" as possible.
the only thing I do with the board is fade out to black at the end and fade in/out with the music during interviews and at the beginning/end f the video.

the problem with laptops (IMO) is that they take too long to render the video.
you first have to import the footage, then edit it, then render it, then burn it.

I don't have the time to do all that on most days.

do yourself a favor. get a decent burner. I found a cheap $100 wal-mart special that only lasted about 4 months. it paid for itself but it was frustation toward the end. it also helped me convince the DZO that he needs to offer DVD.

IMO, the video quality is great.

However, it will rely on you to get good shots.

I'm constantly thinking of new ways to frame stuff, new shots to get on the ground, stuff when the plane lands, where is the sun, low angle when the TI and Passenger climb into the plane, etc. This is because all of your editing will be done in camera.

Otherwise the actual quality with regards to rez and stuff that gets laid down on your DVD is top notch.

thanks guys.
you have been a big help. I talked it over with the DZO and this is very do-able. just got to get it off the ground now, and thanks to your input we will. Ill try to post a copy of the first one....shit I'll owe beer :D
I found a decent burner that also does VHS at a best buy. do you think it would be a good idea to have both or just the DVD? 90% of people have DVD now but there are a few with VHS still. cost $224

You're welcome and best of luck!

We only offer DVD at my home DZ. Not once have i had someone even ask for VHS. As for the price, i can't comment, as we work in Rands here and not US$

Take care

skip the vhs. You might need it once in the life of the recorder.
pope

yea what pope said.
fi the dvd recorder is cheaper b/c its a combo than take a shot with it. but it you are looking at the combo b/c you wanna offer both, you're probaly wasting time.

In the event that you get and older tandem who doesnt have a DVD player I bet their kids will.

and their kids can copy it to vhs if they need to:D

I haven't done a vhs on about 9 months. and that was only b/c at that time vhs was $10 cheaper.
as soon as the price was leveled for vhs/dvd, i havent done 1 vhs
